Not sure this was mentioned already - the untimely demise of founder of Eastenders off licence in Calais (for all those who remember the cross channel booze cruise).

Somewhere there is a TV documentary about him visiting the likes of Hennessy at a trade fair and getting the VIP treatment as one of the largest booze buyers - a Romford barrow boy.

His son (possibly the No1 suspect) was in it being groomed to take over, and speaking fluent French (unlike his Dad who maintained his distinctive accent). However, pile it high and sell it cheap isn't anathema to market traders.

Apparently he still owns the cash 'n carries - one of the largest in UK ownership. When the documentary was made they stated his worth at >£100million. And it was largely cash sales...

He may have started life as a barrow boy, but he sounds like a clever businessman to me.

RIP. If such a thing as after-life exists we can be sure david is dealing. Shrewd, wise and canny, just three attributes of the man.

Shrewd, wise and canny? Three words, which are synonyms of each other. He may well be one or any, but all three is superfluous....... wink

I recall spending some money in his Calais store several years ago. When we got back to our car we realised they had charged us in euro instead of £, making a roughly £450 bill about 70% of that.

On walking back to the store we saw the huge sign - check your purchases before leaving the building because mistakes can't be rectified once you have left.

Cheers David and RIP!

I remember the original documentary with him attending the trade show dressed (IIRC) in a shell suit and carrying a carrier bag and being lauded by champagne companies who previously wouldn't let him on their stands. He loved it. There was another documentary when he was opening Hey Jo. He had dumped the frumpy wife of 30 years and was now squiring a 20 something bimbo. In that he came across as a rather seedy and desperate old man. Wonder what caused his son to murder him?

Yup, indeed they are intertwined, he could have been the three wise men in one. TBH I have never seen these as anything other than individual attributes. Shrewd in working a good deal, wise in proceeding or not and canny as in theoretical or practical (both) ducking and diving. All three interlinked as you say but subtle differences. (is this one for the Masters of English language perhaps?) Either way a beacon for other 'working lads and Lasses' to see how it can be done. smile
