Can a nation afford a space programme whilst it has such high numbers of poor and starving?

I say yes.

But if they just used the money to buy food/medicine for teh poor, then that would be great for about a week, then they would run out of money and still have millions of poor.
Creating a space industry using the money cold (one would hope) lead to job creation, improved education, industrial manufacturing spin offs, inward investment (from companies wanting to launch satellites).

Oh yes, I can easily see the flat broke beggar in the street benefitting from the Indian Space Programme - how did I miss that before?

Oh, righty ho, lets all start space launch programmes then! sure fire winner!

(Let's face it, Ariane costs us all a packet and with Space X under-cutting them by 75% just how profitable do you think it will be?)

So if I use your own logic, we should not give India any aid and instead invest it in starting our own space program. Thereby creating jobs, education blah blah blah. We will all then be rich and can help India better.

Their space programme has led to more accurate weather predictions. India is a nation which gets a fair few cyclones - if you look at the numbers dead in these cyclones now vs 10+ years ago there is a stark difference. It's not all a vanity project.

I don't think we should give them any aid (it's stopping this year anyway however it should have stopped sooner) however just because a nation has lots of poor people it shouldn't mean that they aren't allowed to spend money on science and tech.

Think how quickly you could get a takeaway delivered with that though.

Do you think that the poor (choose a percentile) in America have a better quality of life than the poor in India? Why might that be?

I bet the 10,000 people who DIDN'T drown in the huge typhoon that struck eastern India earlier this year might have some positive words to say about Indian space expenditure.
