Your point about the teaching of History is well made, although to assume teaching is the same as reading is perhaps over simplification. Teaching History in our schools does what you say it does, or at least used to. Wars and conflicts resulted in changes that caused major sociological changes in populations and governments which then gave rise to altered views on the world, useful to note the beginning of new eras. Since when has schools teaching any subject been the end of education? On the other hand, to read History gives a more complete understanding for those who want a truer picture than the superficial. History is bursting with examples of the self-sacrifice and magnificent achievements of Man than you suggest.
I had a history teacher who was inspirational. His last lesson with me was in 1962 but I've retained a fascination in the subject all my life. I buy and read more history books that any other subject. I had to learn dates and dynasties, but even so, he took us along the route of effects. Modern TV is moving along the right lines, with lots more on the social side.
My history teacher told us that 'Everything I'm going to teach you is wrong. I know this because everything I was taught was wrong.'
It was a difficult concept to grasp, as Hen VIII had six wives and there was no way of contradicting it. But as the lessons went by I gradually got to understand what he meant. Now, when I read my books, I know that most/all of it is make believe, and just an interpretation.
I was watching QI and the question came up, How many wives did Hen VIII have. The logic, getting it down to just one, was tortuous and easily challenged, but it brought Mr Howles, my history teacher, to mind immediately. Even on such basics he was proved spot on.
My history teacher was Welsh. Consequently all world history had a Welsh flavour. I even thought of the Romans having a heavy Pontyridd accent. After I left I read history to give me the admittedly biased view of other authors until I read about the victor being the writer of the history. But I had a science teacher, Bill Cook, who insisted on his first name being used. He was inspirational and instilled a lifelong interest. If only they could bottle that magic.
