London oasis of tranquillity

Neither Waterloo or Blackfriars bridges are excessively crowded with pedestrians at peak times, and a new bridge would only take some of that foot traffic.
Does all seem a bit silly though, that whole stretch is well served by bridges already.
Not to forget the pair of foot bridges attached to Hungerford Bridge which are wonderful designs architecturally and which feed right into the South Bank from a much more useful location on the North. The even more impressive Millennium footbridge in the other direction also does a sterling job of providing passage for tourists between iconic locations.Does all seem a bit silly though, that whole stretch is well served by bridges already.

I see a lot of architects' images. I notice that they all seem to show affluent couples going about leisure activities in decent weather.
It's a pet hate of mine. Where roads feature they are always free of traffic with only one a couple of cars parked sporadically - the reality is always cars parked bumper to bumper on both sides.Even in that picture I posted - it looks lovely, there is another couple just ahead with the same romantic pose. Of course there isn't actually enough space for two of these couples to pass each other!

Seven million crossings a year and £175,000,000 is only £1 per crossing for 25 years.
It'll look nice though.
Of course last year it was proposed as a £60m bridge which wouldn't go ahead if it couldn't find public funding. It'll look nice though.
“It is a great example of a project where in our view there doesn’t need to be a major public contribution. But if private sector funding isn’t forthcoming then the project isn’t going to be able to go ahead.” Isabel Dedring, the deputy mayor for transport
So many red flags on this project.

A small toll (e.g. 50p) which they can donate to the gardeners might be a good idea? I'd happily tap in my Oyster if I knew it would deter riff-raff from using it ..rpguk said:
Agreed, I thought it was wonderful at first. However it's becoming clear that the practicalities doesn't stack up as promised. The idea of it being privately funded seems to have been forgotten. There is no need for a crossing there, it won't be a new green space, it'll be a bridge with a few planters on it.
The whole thing seems to be a bit of a vanity project for Joanna Lumley, Hetherwick and Boris.
Personally I think that turning Southwark Bridge into a 'garden bridge' would be a cheaper and more effective solution if we want to go down this route.
That picture looks lovely they even have the smog obscuring the background The whole thing seems to be a bit of a vanity project for Joanna Lumley, Hetherwick and Boris.

We all know, in the real world, there is a requisite density of people drinking from a can of Special Brew, per square-metre of public open space.Even in that picture I posted - it looks lovely, there is another couple just ahead with the same romantic pose. They should build the bridge like they were hundreds of years ago. Full of shops and houses with ste being dropped randomly on the people below, most of whom full of pints of gin.
Them were the days
Personally I'll be looking forward to the results of Blib's school of photography on this one.

I think it's a good idea .... it will take the pressure off the Thames cable car:
