It's very difficult to get any real speed up on Queen Street in a car, let alone a bin lorry. It's very stop start even late at night, along with 3 sets of traffic lights. It's hit pedestrians much further down Queen Street too, prior to George Square.Edited by lazyitus on Monday 22 December 15:35

Where are people reading or hearing that 6 people are confirmed dead? Police Scotland have just stated that at this stage they are not in a position to confirm the number of fatalities.
Such tragic news, my wife works around the corner and is often in that area at lunch time. What an awful time of year for such a thing to happen as well.

Tried looking up weights of bin trucks, and the best matched models based on my eye (6 axles) can weigh between 15 and 25 tonnes. Even at a crawl thats going to clear a road and make short work of a fair few hand brakes.
Are these trucks speed limited at all? I presume we can rule out the reports of 70mph - I just dont think there's enough road to get up to that speed in such a big lump of a truck, nevermind if its actually able to top out that high.

Most are limited to 56 mph (same as normal lorries), and yeah wouldn't take much for one of these to make an impact. 25- 30 mph would cause carnage.Are these trucks speed limited at all? Correct.FFS I really hate the press & media at times, doing their level best to stir up as much emotion and panic as possible.
Looks like a Daf 6 wheeler, from my practical experience of similar machines, just being in drive and lifting off the brake can bowl them along at a fast walking pace, with a very sudden takeoff.The foot falling onto the accelerator, raising the revs above idle, will be enough to pick up to a reasonable speed. No way would it be doing 70, it's only gone 300 metres. At full chat, it would be just about 30.

I've just got quite annoyed/angry at a woman that had phoned up on BBC news. Anyhow, this sounds like a horrific and tragic accident, thoughts go out to the families of those involved. Whilst there's never a 'good' time of year for anything like this to happen, it just seems all the more sad when it happens at Christmas.

not been into the square today but given the time of year George Sq would have been rammed with traffic. if he's had the first incident at GOMA and carried onto the Millennium its been a fair amount of traffic pushed out the way
