Someone mentioned July 13th 1808 in a DM letter, sure enough, there are historical reports of people and animals dropping dead from heat exhaustion, 37C reported in Suffolk (but of course not reliable so doesn't officially exist!).

1808.

I repeat 1808!!!!!!!!!

Interesting compilation of notable weather.

If there are two similar oscillations of very slightly different frequency, the phenomenon is known as a heterodyne, or 'beat', frequency. Two piston engines on a twin engined aircraft can exhibit this if the revs differ slightly. The heterodyne is the difference between the two higher frequencies. Interesting piece in complete contrast to the normal party line.

The Scientific Pantheist Who Advises Pope Francis

“People will believe a big lie sooner than a little one, and if you repeat it frequently enough, people will sooner or later believe it.”
Walter C. Langer

The scientist who influenced Laudato Si, and who serves at the Vatican’s science office, seems to believe in Gaia, but not in God.

By William M. Briggs

St. Francis of Assisi’s hymn Laudato Si spoke of “Brothers” Sun and Fire and “Sisters” Moon and Water, using these colorful phrases figuratively as a way of praising God’s creation. These sentimental words so touched Pope Francis that he named his encyclical after this canticle (repeated in paragraph 87 of the Holy Father’s letter).

Neither Pope Francis nor St. Francis took the words literally, of course. Neither believed that fire was alive and could be talked to or reasoned with or, worse, worshiped. Strange, then, that a self-professed atheist and scientific advisor to the Vatican named Hans Schellnhuber appears to believe in a Mother Earth.

Last one for now: a senator wants schools to teach natural causes and cycles of climate change...why would that even be necessary to ask?!

The Danes also have a funky website showing production of power and gas. Do we have anything like this?

What a ridiculous article, no mention of how the surplus is dealt with, sold off very cheaply to the Noggies or possibly having to pay other national grids to take it.

Paying their neighbours to take it away is very likely what happened in this case. Not that the Independent would ever report it if they did. That would be "unhelpful".

Interestingly, both the regular German power generators and their subsidy farmers don't like that sort of competition one bit.

This website shows the state of play with our national grid:

My concern here is that it has been phrased to look like the intelligent design stuff. Horrible echoes of the Scopes trial, and I doubt real science stands a chance against the "concensus".

It's never exactly how it should be, but not too bad, and good to see it being presented. This bit about the amendment seemed OK: "Wicker's amendment does not mandate that schools teach climate change in any particular way or even that they teach climate change at all. But the fact that it has surfaced as part of the debate over a much broader education bill speaks to the growing controversy over climate education. It directs the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to dole out educational materials highlighting 'the uncertainties inherent in climate modeling and the myriad factors that influence the climate of the Earth.'"

A not-so-good bit is presented as a statement of fact from the author when it's no such thing: "...but the overwhelming majority of climate scientists say that recent increases in global temperatures have been caused largely as a result of human activity that releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere such as the burning of fossil fuels."

There is no such overwhelming consensus as Clare Foran should know by now.

Well, what a surprise.

Humans are not only good at creating "Eco" projects that screw up nature's environments - they screw up their own as well!

Amazing!

Or it it intentional?

If the over 75s are particularly prone to heat issues in the summer (and cold in the winter) then the "aging population" problem and the Country's would be readily fixed by ensuring the most people have to work into their 70s before they can retire and are encouraged to pass on at around 75.

I suspect it is all part of a grand plan.

On the other hand, when the ice age arrives, those in power will be able to claim they knew it was about to happen and that is why warm houses in summer were so important ...

I expect the RSPCA will save the day on the basis that such hot premises are bad for the health of animals and so allow them to start a campaign for compulsory air conditioning for any home with pets.
Don't panic, anyone. Eco-homes, the higher levels of the Code for Sustainable Homes, and the (infamous) "allowable solutions" were all killed off in yesterday's policy announcement.

Did you notice the news stories about further slackening of planning controls? Yup, most of the journalists went for the low-hanging fruit and missed the *real* story which was right next to that stuff on page 46 of the announcement:
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploa...

Pesky politicians, eh? Not quite burying bad news, but hiding it in plain sight. Anyway, eco-homes are no more - at least politically.

Interesting times as many careers and businesses have been built on eco-homes. I rather suspect the thing has gained too much momentum, the building regs will probably continue to incorporate more of the Code's principles as there's just too much coin bound up in BREEAM and the like. After all, what developer would claim their homes aren't 'eco' when the children of young families have been indoctrinated through their schools...

Fun times!

Here's the relevant text for those in a rush:

"The government does not intend to proceed with the zero
carbon Allowable Solutions carbon offsetting scheme, or the proposed 2016
increase in on-site energy efficiency standards, but will keep energy efficiency
standards under review, recognising that existing measures to increase energy
efficiency of new buildings should be allowed time to become established."
