As it happens I got that UN image as the 8th inline from an online search, easily done.

In that UN sourced graphic what adjustments, apart from seasonal, were made? This is a reasonable question in view of the history of data 'adjustments' and the chequered history of the UN on sea level change portrayal. To fix a sea level rise the IPCC cherry picked Hong Kong (six tidal gauges) and focused on the record of one showing 2.3 mm per year sea level rise. Yet it's widely known that HK is a subsiding area involving the compaction of sediment and so consitutes one record which is akin to putting a temperature sensor next to airport tarmac where jets taxi past. From 1992 to 2002 the sea level trend was flat. In 2003, the same data set, which in IPCC publications and on their website had been a straight lin, changed to show a rise of 2.3 mm per year, the same as from the single HK tidal gauge.

This was put to an IPCC official at the Academy of Sciences in Moscow. The IPCC response was that they had to do it because otherwise they would not have got any trend. This typifies the approach with such politicians as the IPCC call by another name.

Abstract to the paper 'The Maldives Sea Level Project II Past-Present-Future' said:
The Maldives have a unique position in sea level research...In the last decade, they have attracted special attention because, in the IPCC-scenario, the Maldives would be condemned to become flooded in the next 50-100 years. Our research data do not lend support to any such flooding scenario, however. On the contrary, we find no signs of any on-going sea level rise…In the last decade, there are no signs of any rise in sea level. Hence, we are able to free the islands from the condemnation to become flooded in the 21st century.
Not forgetting the key fact that a trend, whether rising or falling or level, has of itself no causality to humans. Also not forgetting that the islands have survived for thousands of years due to the previously described mechanism.

Whichever take on the Maldives situation is examined, it has nothing to do with carbon dioxide emissions. It's about politics, not science.

If you actually took the effort to look at real data, and not repeat what you are told, and what your closed mind believes, you wouldn't look so ignorant and sound so, well, errrm, mental.

In passing I note that climate voodoo attracts major funding.

If the ghost of already-dead AGW was exorcised, the dollar impact would be frightening. If it woowoos and rattles chains, the dollar impact is pleasing.

Q. How can we combine the data of the two stations above in a meaningful way?
A. What may be done before combining those data is to increase the new data or lower the old ones until the two series seem consistent. How much we have to adjust these data may be estimated by comparing the time period with reports from both stations: After the offset, the averages over the common period should be equal. (This is the basis for the GISS method). As new data become available, the offset determined using that method may change. This explains why additional recent data can impact also much earlier data in any regional or global time series.

Operative words - adjust, seems consistent, estimated, averages, should be.

Lots of wriggle room in that language for keeping the data on message and funding flowing.

Yup. Just like the word AVERAGE actually means nothing. And line(s) drawn through graphs indicate nowt either. You can create endless mathmaticaly based line(s) on graphs if you are bored.

It must be agreed. After all, data is data. If it is "adjusted" it is no longer "data" but an arbitrary figure.

This is a very interesting topic and I've read the thread on and off for years. To be honest, I just don't know what to believe with regards to the climate science, I guess I don't really care enough to really get into it. There is an obvious polictical agenda of course, though I'm not really convinced it's a bad thing..

From my own observations, all I can say is that we as a species have taken seemingly a lot of carbon based fuels out of the ground and burnt them. Will all this CO2 emission change the composition of gases in the atmosphere? Yes, logically it has to somwhat. Will this lead to a degree of so called greenhouse effect? Again, given what I know about that effcet I think it must have at least some effect. How much effect? This is the really difficult question that is very hard to answer and where the arguements seem to rage. It could well be a minimal effect but I don't think I can know for sure.

For me the big, big issue for mankind into the future is consuming finite resources. There's only so much material in the ground. At some point, who know when, we will surpase peak oil. We can't continue our exponential growth model and consume indefinitely if we want to survive in the way we'd like to in the future (I think at some point we'll have to switch to a more steady state economic model that doesn't rely on constant growth).. Anyhow, it's for this reason, the one of resources, that there has to be a gradual switch to renewable energy, and I think why I pretty much go along with the climate change agenda, regardless of the actual climate science.

I'm an engineer I'm optimistic that the march of progress will go on and technology will solve the problems we face..

As an engineer, if you created a computer model or were using one already programmed, and the obervations of the physical system it represented showed that the model was failing to reproduce reality, would you consider reframing the model in any way?

As an engineer, if somebody approached you in one of your project teams and said something like "there's a signal in the data we collected which shows that the system will overheat dangerously" and you said "OK show me the data and the signal and we'll consider the causes and what to do about it" and the reply was "well actually there's no visible signal anywhere in the data but we believe it's there all the same because it must be there" what would your response be?

Just asking smile I'm sure you can see the relevance of these questions.

This is the only Open Letter involving Ban Ki Moon that I know of, it's not The Year Of Paris vintage though. HTH.

Mr. Secretary-General:

On November 09 this year you told the General Assembly: “Extreme weather due to climate change is the new normal … Our challenge remains, clear and urgent: to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, to strengthen adaptation to … even larger climate shocks … and to reach a legally binding climate agreement by 2015 … This should be one of the main lessons of Hurricane Sandy.”

On November 13 you said at Yale: “The science is clear; we should waste no more time on that debate.”

The following day, in Al Gore’s “Dirty Weather” Webcast, you spoke of “more severe storms, harsher droughts, greater floods”, concluding: “Two weeks ago, Hurricane Sandy struck the eastern seaboard of the United States. A nation saw the reality of climate change. The recovery will cost tens of billions of dollars. The cost of inaction will be even higher. We must reduce our dependence on carbon emissions.”

We the undersigned, qualified in climate-related matters, wish to state that current scientific knowledge does not substantiate your assertions.

The U.K. Met Office recently released data showing that there has been no statistically significant global warming for almost 16 years. During this period, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations rose by nearly 9% to now constitute 0.039% of the atmosphere. Global warming that has not occurred cannot have caused the extreme weather of the past few years. Whether, when and how atmospheric warming will resume is unknown. The science is unclear. Some scientists point out that near-term natural cooling, linked to variations in solar output, is also a distinct possibility.

The “even larger climate shocks” you have mentioned would be worse if the world cooled than if it warmed. Climate changes naturally all the time, sometimes dramatically. The hypothesis that our emissions of CO2 have caused, or will cause, dangerous warming is not supported by the evidence.

The incidence and severity of extreme weather has not increased. There is little evidence that dangerous weather-related events will occur more often in the future. The U.N.’s own Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says in its Special Report on Extreme Weather (2012) that there is “an absence of an attributable climate change signal” in trends in extreme weather losses to date. The funds currently dedicated to trying to stop extreme weather should therefore be diverted to strengthening our infrastructure so as to be able to withstand these inevitable, natural events, and to helping communities rebuild after natural catastrophes such as tropical storm Sandy.

There is no sound reason for the costly, restrictive public policy decisions proposed at the U.N. climate conference in Qatar. Rigorous analysis of unbiased observational data does not support the projections of future global warming predicted by computer models now proven to exaggerate warming and its effects.

The NOAA “State of the Climate in 2008” report asserted that 15 years or more without any statistically-significant warming would indicate a discrepancy between observation and prediction. Sixteen years without warming have therefore now proven that the models are wrong by their creators’ own criterion.

Based upon these considerations, we ask that you desist from exploiting the misery of the families of those who lost their lives or properties in tropical storm Sandy by making unsupportable claims that human influences caused that storm. They did not. We also ask that you acknowledge that policy actions by the U.N., or by the signatory nations to the UNFCCC, that aim to reduce CO2 emissions are unlikely to exercise any significant influence on future climate. Climate policies therefore need to focus on preparation for, and adaptation to, all dangerous climatic events however caused.

I can of course see your logic. All the climate graphs I've seen dating from around 1850 to present day show at least some warming in that period though, is that not the signal that's being claimed?

No, as it happens, it's not! What you see is mostly 'adjustments' to actual near-surface data, which corrupt it to introduce the warming trend, and even after the 'adjustments' there's still no visible causal human signal in any global climate data of any kind.

Raw data from places as geographically disparate as Oz/NZ and the USA show a flat temperature 'trend' over the last ~100 years near as dammit.

What's visible is the same natural variation there has always been, and contrary to the hyped claims, it's not unprecedented in either rate or extent, not by a long shot.
