They're reconvening to continue the discussion at 20.20?

It's the overall CTBill discussion, so they're onto the next amendment. The Comms&Data bill insertion has been refused.

Good news for now. It seems that those 4 lords, a part of the 'security lobby' are a little bit cross that the Home Office failed to give them the revised version of the Comms & Data bill that Blencathra & co. rejected all those months ago. Wonder why HMG has held back on the new draft?

Yeah, they do:

wink

Theresa May is going to have to get some bigger Bogeymen.

Perhaps she should have left New Labour's Snooper's Charter in the New Labour Climate of Fear back catalogue?

But both the coalition partners were against the Snooper's Charter before the 2010 election weren't they?

Perhaps it's a Common Purpose initiative like the Leveson Inquiry and Press regulation?

Do I complain to IPSO about the news coverage of Russian Bear bombers flying up the Celtic Sea and English Channel not being scary enough?

Interesting piece by David Davis......

" If MI5 sticks to outdated tactics, Emwazi won’t be the last British security failure

The strategy of allowing known terrorists to remain free on the streets lets them carry out evil deeds, recruit conspirators – and slip through the net "

http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/feb/...

Boris also has his say:

"Boris Johnson has attacked Theresa May, the Home Secretary, for a decision to water down anti-terror powers which potentially allowed terrorists like Mohammed Emwazi to evade the security services.
The Mayor of London said that the Government has made a “mistake” by modifying control orders in 2011.
He said it gave terror suspects like Emwazi, known as Jihadi John, the “benefit of the doubt”.
Mr Johnson did not name Mrs May but said that the politicians responsible “need to think very carefully about why they did it”.
His comments will infuriate Mrs May and could create a rift at the top of the Conservative Party ahead of the general election."

So if they are known terrorists, how about convicting them of some crime or other?

That's where it all falls apart.

I'd heard he said that. Was he kind enough to point out what other approach they should take?

Better to chuck them in prison and worry about that later. No way at all could such powers be abused rofl

David Davis was followed by Rifkind on the matter on Radio 4's Today in Parliament lastnight.

I buy into David Davis.

Perhaps I am deluded, but I'd like to think him and Alan Johnson would make a better fist of leading their respective parties.

The documents have been in the public sphere for some time now.

What the hell is this farce, they're already collecting every single piece of data available?

I always remember the Nicaraguan affair where the CIA thought Nicaraguan Sandistas, who had overthrow a dictator the US was propping up in Nicaragua, where communist (though they where actually really socialists) and proceeded to fund properly awful terrorists to fight a democratically elected government that went on to implement land, education, health and constitutional reforms paving the way for a more modern state. When you listen to the views expressed today your cringe at what was being said and done by the US.

When you look back on the whole filthy affair now it's clear the security services lacked oversight by people with forethought and principals to stop the CIA undermining future US governments and influence in the region.
