I often wonder why god chose the Middle East for all these revelations and stuff. If you're going to send your son down, send him somewhere where they have an advance civilisation at that time and proper record keeping. China for example.

Seems a shame that a bunch of backward and largely illiterate desert nomads we picked as the recipients.

On the question of prayer - isn't it kinda a giveaway that people only pray for things that are possible.

Pray for somebody to recover from a recoverable/curable disease.
Pray for somebody to recover from a serious accident.
Pray for a lost person to be found.
Pray to find a new job after being made redundant.
Pray to win the lottery.
Pray to find "the perfect tux" for a university ball (I know somebody who prayed for just that thing - and had that prayer answered - or so he claimed)

Has anyone every prayed for something that, as far as we know is totally impossible, and had that prayer demonstrably "answered" (e.g. an amputee spontaneously regrowing a lost limb).
When I was a kid, I prayed to God every night to send me a new bike. Then I figured out how it worked, so I stole one and prayed for forgiveness...

Likewise, aliens seem to prefer landing in the vicinity of Buttfk, Arkansas.

S'pose that's what happens when religion is used as an excuse by a ne'er-do-well!

Have you read 'The Mahdi' by A. J. Quinnell? I enjoyed it hugely.

Isn't such an approach actually enshrined in some religious dogma (e.g. Catholicism). You are basically given free reign to sin all you like - as long as you confess and repent your sins before death.

You don't even have to seek forgiveness from your victims - apparently god's forgiveness can override that of your victims, regardless of their feelings on the matter.....nice and convenient huh!

Sort of sums up Tony Blair's reason for conversion really.

? I always assumed there was a commercial motive for Blair's conversion. He doesn't strike me as the type who would bother about concepts such as 'forgiveness'.

Hasn't he been doing a lot in the US. Would probably go down quite well over there.

Strange that people in 'the West' are religious and that's not held science back yet he wants to eliminate religion. Yes religion is a point of particular conflict in certain areas of the world yet there are issues abound that have no connection to religion, namely U.S-Russia-Japan-North Korea-South Korea -China. How does eliminating religion sort that? The word he uses is tribalism and tribalism is the problem, religion being one of many things that tribes choose as a differentiating factor. Strange to see India striding forwards in commerce, science and space exploration while being a massively religious nation and of many different religious denonimations too.

Steve! Why dwell on thousand year old history when we can be talking about the here and now?
And I wouldn't expect anything better from such a source.

Does this mean we also forget about that 2000 year old fairy story while we are at it?

Dwelling on history seems to be an option to take and argument to or avoid depending on the need. Tick the appropriate box.

From my understanding of history.

The UK has a very long history related to this particular god and it is ingrained into society. You cannot ignore that influence. Curses such as "for gods sake" or "jesus christ!", I come out with these, it is part of my history and language in common use and has a reason for being there. Festivals picked by the religion are used annually. Cathedrals, examples of power, are everywhere (major cities etc. as opposed to up every tree), churches in almost every town and village, many going back centuries, all tied to who ever held power. Religion did embrace technology (idea's of etc.), but only to the extent it could control it and abuse it. Much like the Cathedrals and projection of power and control downwards, idea's were to be controlled and only let out the bag if they thought it was good for the church.

Now the cat is out the bag, not happening as quick as I would like but one example is the pope (last one? they are all the same anyway) has decided that he would have no problem with an alien landing on some governments lawn, I suspect it is more to do with they cannot control the idea anymore, so must go with the flow on this one. He would get my respect allowing a woman to take high office in the catholic faith. Same for all the other male oriented religions.

I think what happens in the here and now is interesting with respect religions as they have to cope with freedom of information.

Edited gad to god (sentence 3). kicked to picked (Festivals picked by the religion etc.)
