They're a very old firm, Crankedup (previous poster on this thread) has a 1930's example!

Now available for hire, also I can offer boating blazers, white slacks and straw boaters along with a bottle of champagne. Luxury picnic hampers and a man servant to pander to one's every want and need as optional extras. smile

Hopefully bringing my new rag top this year, though I'll be in the car park field with all the 'moderns'.

Speaking of caravans though, I can't think of a worse way to have a holiday, who'd want to be stuck in one of those miserable stboxes?
Fully air conditioned and blown air central heating that I can control , and not some cost saving engineer hidden in a hotel basement
Full sized shower , full sized lavatory ( albeit chemical but there are no unpleaant odours any more than the usual smells from the smallest room )
A bed that only me and other half have slept in , so no bugs or noxious body fluids to share with thousands of other people that use hotel beds
Not kicked out my room just because the room maid wants to fluff up some pillows .

Arriving at a holiday location , finding I dislike it and being able to move on at the drop of a hat .

Humm Hotels , I cant think of a worst way to have a holiday , who'd want to be stuck in a miserable hotel with an uncomfortable bed which smells of sweat and who knows what else . in room with no view in a location they dislike .
Caravan for me every time

All very well put MX51ROD!
All I can think of adding is that we don't unduly hold up traffic when we tow. That is to say that I set my cruise at 63 (60 on GPS) on duals & m/ways and use common sense on single carriageways. In many years of towing I have never yet had to pull over to let a line of other vehicles to pass - in fact, I get held up on many an occasion by doddery old tw@ts in small cars crawling along in NSL stretches at 45-50. These morons are also the bain of life for my HGV-driving son; his comments regading them, even for this forum, are unprintable.

Stuck in one of those things, why would anyone be stuck in one, every one I have seen has had a door to enable the occupants to get out, and honestly, you can't think of a worse way to have a holiday ? You clearly lack imagination !

Nothing wrong with caravans, a modern caravan is a great way to have a holiday.
I can take my wife and dog with me, one of which is not welcome in many hotels, our caravan has everything I need for a week or more away from home.
I have four kids. Holidaying was expensive. We went camping. As the years went by we ended up with a 24' x 18' frame tent, with annex and toilet tent. We then went for a trailer tent and finally opted for a caravan. One of the most idyllic holidays I ever had was in the 'van in north Devon. I had a 60 litre rucksack and my wife had a 40, and each kid had their own (then just the three). We got up at 7.30, washed the lot of us. The rucksack was already packed and we'd buy the fresh food at the camp shop. We'd then walk to a little village nearby and have a picnic breakfast by the pond, feeding residue to the ducks. Then walk for an hour or so to a lovely beach that was unfrequented. The kids would do what kids would do. I would build a sandcastle or similar, blow the dingy up and let the kids paddle on the ponds left by the tide. Lunch at 1 ish, tea at 4 ish, then back to the campsite when we'd get in by 6 or so. Then unpack the backpack and repack it for the next day.

The holiday was so pleasant.

We slept in our own beds. The linen was clean, and only we had used it. The toilet was ours, and no one else used it. We would use the site's showers.

Now we go into cottages, villas and such, with kids and their kids. When we are sitting in other people's furniture, in other people's choice of cushions, where the TV should be, and feeling like we are visitors, talk often gets around to the old holidays, and the time I fell off a stile and couldn't get up until I'd taken off the backpack.

The caravan, at 15'6", plus awning, gave us the freedom to go where we wanted at short notice, essential as I often had my holidays cancelled, and in comfort.

At 6'3" I used to dread hotel beds. I would tell them when I booked that I needed a long bed but there was always a problem.

When the kids left I bought a two birth, a 16' one. It had a shower that we could use. It was more comfortable than any hotel/cottage we've ever stayed in. There's no listening to the neighbours have a row or sex or both.

If I could justify the expense, I'd buy a caravan tomorrow and a big tug to pull it.

I've tried all sorts of holidays but I like being in my own space, as does my wife, and a caravan provides that. Each to their own.

My wife caught me on PH when I was supposed to be working. I told her I was supporting caravaning and she brought up one holiday we had, I think in Shropshire.

We went to a certificated location, one where a farmer is allowed to have 6 caravans and any number of tents on his land without planning permission.

We got there to be told that one chap's car had been in an accident, his wife in hospital, and he'd be staying until she was released. So as he would not be put away to the council by a neighbouring farm, he had arranged for us to go to another site or we could park our van behind a ruined building on a field all to ourselves.

This field was quite small, a couple of acres, but it bordered a wood and had a stream at the far end. The following morning, with early morning mist partially obscuring our view, we saw deer come into the field to drink at the stream. For twenty minutes or so we were entranced. Then the following morning they returned.

We were only there for a week, moving to Norfolk for the next one, and every morning, if there was mist, they came to drink. Four times in all. The other caravaners - there were no tents - took turns to run the chap to the hospital and we took our turn. When she was released, the chap let us stay in the field.

It was like christmas for the kids: they got up early.

There was only one bus in the morning and one bus in the evening each way. We went for a day's walk mainly along bridleways and we didn't see another person all day. The kids didn't particularly enjoy it so it was a drive to the beach the next day.

Yes indeed Derek, good posts.

I used to be anti-caravan and only bought a motorhome to tow my car and stay at events, when circumstances changed and I didn't need to stay at events the motorhome went and was replaced by a new caravan, we got more space and money back on the deal.
We have a couple of favourite sites that we go back to but also like to try out different places, and as Derek said if you go someplace and don't like it you hitch up and move on.

Caravaning has a lot going for it (apart from emptying the toilet)

How does it feel to spend your first night in your tupperware on wheels to know you have pissed off hundreds if not thousands of people who were stuck behind you?

I'm sorry if you are one of the considerate ones who moves at night, but many don't!
