I have a motor home now, but have caravanned all over Europe and the UK. It is the same old rubbish trotted out time after time. Usually the cause for tailbacks are the cars in front that stop you overtaking. Or the cyclists in packs, or the trucks forced to sit a 10mph below the speed limit for a car.
We should live and let live, if everyone wanted to go and stay in a hotel, there would never be enough rooms.

Ask any area like, the Lakes, Scotland and any costal area, they love caravanners, as they bring millions into the area.
In fact, the caravan industry is a huge exporter and employs thousands of people in the UK creating jobs and wealth, is it so wrong.

I have never been held up for more than a few minuets behind a caravan, but on Friday I was behind a queue on the road from Ipswich to Norwich for 30 miles or so behind a line of trucks, do I hate trucks? No.

Most people who hate caravans do so because it is fashionable and is based on lack of knowledge as to what it offers.
Like many on here time spent with your family talking and walking is much better than being at home sitting in different rooms.

Most of the tripe regarding being held up by caravans here is hearsay and based on prejudice borne out of ignorance of FACTS and actual evidence of a hold up caused by a moving caravan
Prejudice borne of the overused rants of Clarkson in many cases I think.

I generally stick to dual carriageways when possible even if it means driving a little further, of the two occasions I remember pulling into a layby, one to let a few cars past, and it was just a few, I ended up sitting behind them anyway as they didn't actually go any faster once ahead, the other was a single car which came up behind quite quickly and obviously in a hurry so I pulled into the side, he passed gave a friendly (I think) wave and was on his way.

This nonsense about always being held up by caravans is getting very old.

For what it is worth, I don't like or "get" the idea of a holiday in a caravan, the whole thing just seems like a great expense and difficulty to me. if I did want to go on such a trip, (I never will) I'd almost certainly rent a static, but then I'd rather stay at home and enjoy the countryside here.

I do appreciate that such activities bring much needed revenue to quieter parts of the country, and whilst I dont like the idea of a caravan holiday I can accept that they aren't going away and being stuck behind one wont be ruining my life - I'm far more likely to be stuck behind a lorry for most of the year, I'm never really in a rush to get anywhere.

Speaking of caravans though, I can't think of a worse way to have a holiday, who'd want to be stuck in one of those miserable stboxes?
Fully air conditioned and blown air central heating that I can control , and not some cost saving engineer hidden in a hotel basement
Full sized shower , full sized lavatory ( albeit chemical but there are no unpleaant odours any more than the usual smells from the smallest room )
A bed that only me and other half have slept in , so no bugs or noxious body fluids to share with thousands of other people that use hotel beds
Not kicked out my room just because the room maid wants to fluff up some pillows .

Arriving at a holiday location , finding I dislike it and being able to move on at the drop of a hat .

Humm Hotels , I cant think of a worst way to have a holiday , who'd want to be stuck in a miserable hotel with an uncomfortable bed which smells of sweat and who knows what else . in room with no view in a location they dislike .
Caravan for me every time
Every word is spot on.
But not for me the luxuries you speak of, my loo is a porta-loo with 'blue' situated in an toilet tent alongside my old caravan. A bucket of semi warm water chucked over me constitutes a shower. I do however use a modern two burner propane gas hob for cooking hippy
Priceless and relaxing.

I will take this for a week. The man servant will be you and you will be dressed as a French maid with a feather duster on a stick.

Some sensible posts in this thread thank fully already.

I've just bought my first caravan which I'm collecting at the end of March. I can't wait.

My kids are excited, they have their own fixed bunks and they know we aren't the sort of family to be sat in our caravan in a wet muddy field looking at the rain beating down. Ferries are booked for trips to the French Riviera and northern Italy already.

Before that Devon awaits us in April, those that hate caravans so much I'll look forward to holding you up on your personal roads, be sure to wave your certificate of ownership at me as you overtake so I fully appreciate that I've no right to hold you up briefly, and in doing so have ruined your holiday, nay your whole year in fact biggrin

I'll pull over if I see traffic building behind and it's safe to do so, seems a given to me to do this when I can.

For me the holiday will start long before the destination is reached, the fun of prepping everything, loading up, hitching up and the 'getting there' aspect hold a lot of appeal too.

As for Ray Mears, I doubt he's ever been in a caravan, his 'displaced urban' nonsense suggests so. If he's going to make a case against them at least trot out something half sensible.

I have no problem with your views , it would be stupid to think everyone should like my type of holiday
As to the expense of caravan ownership
My last caravan lost less than 50% of its value over 10 or more years of ownership that equates to less than £500 per year .So I had an ensuite room available for as many trips I wanted for £500 pa
Just fuel and pitch costs

All I can think of adding is that we don't unduly hold up traffic when we tow.
Yes you do. I know this because I am one of those 'unduly' held up.

Petemate said:
In many years of towing I have never yet had to pull over to let a line of other vehicles to pass
The many caravanners I have been stuck behind have presumably had the same opinion.
OK, I have to respond.
On motorways, there are at least two lanes. Nuff said - off you go, no hold up.
On dual carriageways, the nsl or any posted lesser limit, is the same for towing vehicles as for cars. The towing car we have is more than capable of maintaining a good pace. Should you feel it necessary to want to exceed the limit, then you will be held up behind me, and I will not count that as 'unduly'.
Bearing in mind that we take the caravan away only about four times per year, my memory serves me well enough to recall that the only occasions where there has been a queue behind me (less than a handful in fact) have been caused by a driver in front crawling along at about 5mph less than the posted limit.
In your second quote please note I stated that I have never HAD to pull over. I do not consider that I should pull over when following such a moron who should not (IMHO)be on the road in the first place.

I'm not surprised people who own caravans have never been held up by one, in their Vauxhall Zafiras.

Ray Mears is much more sufferable than a caravan.

And both are much more sufferable than the clarkson wannabe "I hate caravans/they hold me up everytime I go anywhere/they shouldn't be on the road" types.

You omit the fact that certain other cars are not as capable.
