Claimed to be the Director of GCHQ...no secrets revealed apparently.

No 10 should release the tape, after all no secrets were involved.

biglaugh Good work! Just in time for four Lords to foist the Snooper's Charter through the Lords tomorrow with their amendments.

Not quite as amusing as those two British cyber Cops getting their phone call to their counterparts in the US that were popping over to the UK recorded.

Yeah, GCHQ is really secure.

According to The Guardian, somebody got the GCHQ Director's mobile phone number - presumably by asking for it sonar claimed to be a personal not official number.

"In a separate incident, a caller rang GCHQ and managed to obtain Hannigan’s mobile phone number."

What could be achieved or attempted with the bloke's mobile number besides calling and texting him on it?

My first thought was they wanted it to spoof the Caller ID of that mobile so that it looked legit when making the next call to Cameron's office?

It's quite ballsy, I'm sure it's linked to the "snooper's charter" going through, but am wondering if/how they can release details publicly without getting into trouble, or whether they were going to keep quiet and hope that it would be announced and just cause embarassment.

If no secrets or sensitive information were divulged, and even if Number 10 doesn't release the tape, then either the caller or Putin might well decide otherwise. There may be various collateral benefits from this happening as it did, when it did, not least the wakey wakey aspect.

I think they were playing a trick on the new boy at GCHQ. Leave a message on his desk - "R Sole called on this number; call him back". When he calls, the Downing Street operator just puts him straight through...

Mystery solved it seems: He did it for the lulz and rang The Sun after. Random prankster who "was off [his] face on booze and cocaine”.

Security Services have not said:
We didn't think of that approach.

Ffs, so close to an election you would think Gideon had more important things to do.
