Afraid mixed race as proposed in that article isn't PC this week - wish these journos could agree

"Mixed race is a misleading term since it implies that a 'pure race' exists."

Tiger Woods, interviewed on TV about his broken teeth, explained that he had worn a mask and scarf over his face to avoid being recognised. He said he had been, "Trying to blend in, because there's not a lot of brown dudes at the ski races". Nice one!

The MacMillan dictionary produced by MacMillan publishers has advice to the contrary of current thinking.

Black
OFFENSIVE - a black person. This word is sometimes considered offensive, so you should be very careful about using it.

I'm not going to put the URL in here - as there are a lot of offensive words on their definitions page.

I just saw this on CNN and had a sneaky feeling there would be a sizeable thread on here wink

I am white English/Chinese/South American/brown Caribbean, if asked I refer to myself as English/British mixed. Mixed-race is not an offensive term, I don't know anyone with any sense who would find a problem with this term.

The term "coloured" is not offensive, it lets me know that the person in question is shade of brown without giving my mixed-race eyebrows any reason to raise. It may be an older term, but we use quite a few words which have been around for far longer and frankly nobody gives a st. It wasn't offensive then, isn't now and doesn't have any negative connotations so there's no issue.

Benedict shouldn't have apologised IMO, the media just enjoys creating a witch so they can go on a hunt.

The incredible Bill Burr nails it every single time when ridiculing race issues in the media and the apologists that get overexcited about nothing! (NSFW). Donate a few quid to the man as the show was from his pay-per view, worth every penny. Hilarious podcast too. biggrin

Bill Burr is funny, that's true, but a world modeled on the opinions of stand up comedians - hmmm, I'm not sure, it's there job to reveal and subvert the ridiculous to make us laugh, it's there job to upset people they have special license, a world where we're all walking around behaving like Bill Burr, Chris Rock or Bill Hicks would be a pretty edgy place, sure you could handle that big boy?

Surely better than a respected man being splashed all over global news for saying a word that someone (not this coloured chap) somewhere might possibly get mildly annoyed about despite him trying to help out his fellow actors/entertainers? smile

Really? You think in a world where we're given carte blanche to use language people find offensive this is the worst thing that could happen? Some of the snow drops further up the thread got their knickers in a twist because I called him Cumbercock and suggested he was a privileged out of touch toff, of course some people are able to take it with gloves off, but I think the general jist of this thread is that some people just lack the empathy or intelligence to be given that responsibility, some people just don't get why Al Murray is funny or why Alf Garnet existed, the just laugh along thankful that their not the one being picked on and made to feel small.

I'm not saying Benedict did anything other than a brain fart under pressure and of course it's hard to keep up with what people find offensive but when you're in a position of power as he is, and privilege as he is then you deserve to be held to account.

That is a very offensive thing to say. More offensive than Cumberbatch's in many ways, as his was an honest error..

Yeah, but I was only joking - so that's alright then isn't it? And I said it on some obscure corner of the internet in front of some equally obscure and sad individuals (I count my self in that - don't take offense) and not on national TV.

And The Toffs were never subjected to 200 years of apartheid and slavery and being treated as sub human, put in Zoos and the like. And I never made several £million acting in a film about said enslavement of toffs, and I wasn't claiming to be working for more toff inclusion in my workplace.

So in many ways it was more offensive but in many ways it was also an irrelevant aside for my own amusement and nothing really to do with the main point under discussion, you were totally at liberty to ignore it.

You aren't joking

You are a lefty burning piece of jealousy

Why do you hate toffs so much?

How much do you hate them?

Would you like them all to be rounded up and killed?

Who knew Benidicked Cumberbung was such a homoerotic figure for you guys?
Nothing to do with him being a homoerotic figure and more to do with you being a knob.

Oh, and unlike Cumberbatch, I suspect no-one on this thread would come to your defence.

What I find sad is the fact that Cumberbatch was PROMOTING equality for black actors, but because he used outdated terminology certain individuals on social networking sites have decided to rebrand him as some kind of KKK Grand Wizard in an excruciating display of OTT mock outrage. Can't believe his apology was so grovelling!

This thread makes me wonder why I ever look at PH. But I know I'll continue because of some weird compulsion to see how bad it is.

Well at least you called him by his actual name in that post, not the childish Cumber(add your own insult here) that you have in other posts.

Reading your posts remind me why I gave up my socialist leanings, I was around 23 at the time, I realised that socialism was all about envy, it wasn't that I wanted equality for all, that would be stupid, we are not all equal, it was about jealousy, I didn't have so why should others have.

I wanted some, so I worked and learned and worked some more, I am no longer envious. You should try it.
