If you think this incident didn't need Police interference then surely you must accept that the enforcement based upon what people say has gone too far. However you go on to say "I personally couldn't care less if it stayed as it is now." This is in itself a contradiction.

Personally I find your (albeit swear filter censored) use of bad language equally as objectionable as the comments by the person who made the wholly inappropriate joke.
I'm sure I'll be repeating myself when I say I think police action is too far, but something should be done in some sort of naming and shaming form.

Are you sure I'm contradicting myself when I couldn't care less if there's some sort of police prosecution process regarding things like this? It's too far in my eyes, but I don't care either way.

And you find a few censored swear words equally as "objectionable" as what this boy said? They swear in movies above a PG rating. Do you not watch them?

Honestly mate
Well it always used to be the case that society was kind of self-censored by virtue of the fact that people preferred to be polite and civil to each other for the most part.

The enforcement of these standards by the state has undermined this natural pseudo-censorship, as always happens when the state decides to take over something that used to be a personal/individual responsibility, the net result is the direct opposite of what was intended.

"Bad taste" jokes used to come out so quickly in the past and would spread around via word of mouth. Then it changed to txt messages and now via social media. Any major event you can thing of will have a joke attached to it, rightly or wrongly that’s what people do, it’s nothing new.

I don’t ever remember hearing stories of people being cautioned in the first two methods of distribution, social media has changed all that and these things easily reach the “professionally offended” where in the past you’d know who of your mates you could talk to without getting in trouble, you can't do that with social media!
There's a difference between forwarding/telling a joke amongst people you know and publishing it for all to see though

In the olden days you might forward that gary glitter joke to your mates or tell it down the pub but you wouldn't stop outside primary schools and tell random mothers; thats what publishing it via twitter etc does.

Not commenting on the right or wrongs of either his "crime" or the response... although some people do still think of online as a consequence-free environment
This.

Not quite sure why so many people on PH can't separate a small, secluded participating audience for a joke (like mates in the pub) from mass communication (like tweeting).

Not really your mate but I'll take it wink

You can't say " .. I think police action is too far, but something should be done in some sort of naming and shaming form. ... It's too far in my eyes, but I don't care either way. " and then not believe you're contradicting yourself.

You either have no view or you care, else you wouldn't have a view. You may not care a lot but clearly you care as you bothered to post tongue out

I don't really watch films. I'd rather be doing something constructive. Just because there is swearing in popular culture doesn't necessarily make it acceptable. One of the reasons for films having a certificate is in order for people to make a judgement on whether what they are likely to see is likely to offend them and thefore decide whether or not to watch.

idea Maybe we need a board of classification for social media?

Could be a lot of people don't have mates and have never told a joke, and don't really understand what a joke is.

I gave an opinion. Trust me, I don't care either way. My opinion is the boy isn't a very nice one, and whatever happens to him won't really impact on my life, so don't give a toss either way.

When it's aimed at me specifically, I'm sure I'll act accordingly.

And agree with the above comment where there used to be self censorship. Problem with that is some people couldn't self censor themselves to show a level of common courtesy. I suppose that's why there's threads like this one on here

Inappropriate and very offensive, BUT he should never have been cautioned for that!

It angers me when this happens yet you hear of Muslim extremists chanting and screaming insensative abuse during funeral processions of dead soldiers and nothing is done about that.
