There was a BL main dealer and a swimming baths previously on the site of the Church Way, Doncaster site.
Wow, how long ago was that? Seems strange as St.james baths is down the road.

As if the town centre wasn't empty and unappealing enough as it was.

It's starting to look like Tesco is trying to release some equity from its land bank, I bet most of the big sites are freehold and will become housing, car dealerships or similar.
every town centre in Scotlands the same, 1 in 3 shops shut and polluted by charity shops and big issue sellers, it a never ending circle with all the old opeople out early doors and then the pram pushing single mothers out later with their offspring and keeping them stocked up on greggs sausage rools Mc Donalds and fizzy juice.

The TESCO in Kirkcaldys car park was on the roof, had some steep ramp to get up too it as well.

We're heading full-circle with developments now. I've heard of car dealer groups buying up office and even residential sites to flatten and build new dealerships on, there's a shortage of the prime sites for a lot of business types and they're trying to expand again after the recession. Manufacturers have open points they need to fill, and want to do it in the right locations so they're prepared to subsidise the development if needed.

I don't think the store in Kirkcaldy will get this treatment though wink

I'm surprised to see one local to me not closing. To be fair they are all quite busy but we have 2 superstores and an extra as well as 3 express stores within 8 miles of my house, although surprisingly not one in my actual town. Make that radius 10 miles and I could add another Extra and probably an express or two.

The extra is 3 miles from one of the superstores and that superstore has an express 1 mile down the road. The other superstore also has an express within about a mile.

Madness how they over saturated areas. I'm not surprised they're not doing as well as they used to.

EDIT -

There's more than I thought and they're all closer too! Madness really.

Never mind that, I'm surprised no one made them build a store in Cheadle to stop the locals driving their horse and carts down the A50.

ETA You can just make out the horse & cart in the top of vehicle exclusions: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.976138,-2.098333...

My village has a new Tesco Express opening on Friday - I thought it might not go ahead...but it is.

I expect most of the closures are where there is a duplicate store, perhaps larger or more modern nearby. Just looked at the Chatham branch on Streetview and it looks old outdated and constrained, probably a prime site for a valuable mixed use redevelopment
This is the case for Bicester Metro listed as closing, Sainsbury's have just built a very large store less than 100 metres away, no chance an metro in a pedestrian area with no parking shoe-horned into an old building can compete with a new superstore with oodles of parking that also has an entrance in the same pedestrian area.

Think they dropped the ball on that one...it is not a pretty store and suffers from theft alot...mostly due to location and layout... access is tough too

but its a huge store, with an adjacent similarly large "indoor market" which I think is now some kind of discount furniture store

but the point is there is no rival or additional Tesco for about 5/6 miles in either direction, maybe one small Sainsburys if you count that but its not close really. lots of local custom that will have to hop on a bus. There would have been a fantastic opportunity to update that one and also build an adjacent parking lot, multi-use premises etc. But I guess its easier to write it off.

Unless it is snapped up and turned into BTL flats which I am sure it will be, what somebody posted earlier will be true, lots of lost jobs, lost presence, run down blight on the area (even more so than now)

Would be interesting to see how that list compared to locations for Aldi, Lidl, B&M and the like?

The Chatham one has a disgusting multi story car park attached, for which you have to pay (when the barriers haven't been stolen, broken or removed - again)

Anyone driving would go up to the larger one at Bowater, with its free parking IMHO.

Shame for the 100+ workers though, especially those that can't drive - there's not many other shops in the area, aside from Pound and Charity ones.

Agreed it is disgusting - actually have never dared use it

But if you are this side of the hill up to Gillingham, its actually a nightmare to get there due to traffic. If it was clean, safe and accessible I think it would be a winner, and there is a lot of local custom within walking distances who shall we say will not likely own a car, who would walk there.

It needs developing with a few above street walk-ways, decent parking etc, with a more welcoming vibe, but I guess that would be pretty costly

shame

Greyfriar's baths was derelict in the late 70s. I remember it well as my dad used to park for free on waste ground there if the art college was already full - which it always was by early afternoon on a Saturday. Don't think there are any pics of the exterior. Here's a pic of the Leyland dealer at the C&A roundabout (the baths are at the treeline) :

The Chatham one was meant to close when Gillingham opened, but they kept it open for some reason. My mum has worked there for over 25 years, so looks like redundancy for her.

I live up Chatham Hill, so generally go there or Hempstead Valley Sainsburys. Always found it dead quiet and with massively wide aisles, which suits my hatred of the locals around here. The car park is council owned and run, nothing yo do with Tesco, but Tesco own the store part and the furniture store next door, so guess it's worth a few bob.

Problem with the express ones is they don't take the piss and charge higher prices like a shop would in those areas. One near me has a a cue out the door people shopping when I'm just trying to pay for petrol.

That's a shame but hopefully she will get a a nice payout

Guessing not many staff will be absorbed by the other stores

Had a look at this to see if one of the 3 we have would be closing. We have an Express, Metro and a recently enlarged Superstore, but alas, no, all staying. Noted that the Wrexham superstore was closing (OH family live that way). A quick google identified Tesco actually have 4 superstores in Wrexham! No bloody wonder their closing some if that's the case elsewhere in the country. Some places really deserve the Tescotown moniker!
