My village has a new Tesco Express opening on Friday - I thought it might not go ahead...but it is.
I think we live in the same village, Clapham?I'm feeling for Charlie opposite as he will surekly be wiped out.
But yes, Charlie probably will have his margins cut so his business isn't viable anymore.

I expect most of the closures are where there is a duplicate store, perhaps larger or more modern nearby. Just looked at the Chatham branch on Streetview and it looks old outdated and constrained, probably a prime site for a valuable mixed use redevelopment
Exactly, take the Bicester Metro that is closing. Not only do they have a superstore on the edge of town which is about to be replaced by an Extra store but there is also 4 Express stores, 3 Co-op stores, An Aldi, A Lidl an M&S food and a new Sainsburys superstoredavepoth said:
I wonder whether this is just a bit of PR spin - it sounds like most of these sites are grotty and in "TescoTowns" anyway - so they may have been part of a phased closure and redevelopment plan that has been done all at once to placate the shareholders?
They've been quietly closing Express stores, and of course the Superstore near Ely that never opened is pretty famous.jamiebae said:

As expected most are the Metro and Express format, but there are a few proper superstores shutting too, mostly those located in less, erm, glamorous locations like Kirkcaldy, Chatham and Doncaster. For some of these places the closures will be devastating, it's amazing how communities are usually against new supermarkets, but when an existing one closes it can have a huge impact.
The one in Grangemouth is right in the central shopping precinct, and has been there for ages I'm sure. New ASDA nearby there too (which is massive) might have something to do with it.As expected most are the Metro and Express format, but there are a few proper superstores shutting too, mostly those located in less, erm, glamorous locations like Kirkcaldy, Chatham and Doncaster. There's a big one near us. Only half the tills are open and its never that busybusy/carpark never that full. True a bigger sq footage can make a lot of customers seem less but its still deserted most times. Makes you wonder how it breaks even? The nearesh Sainsburys is always busy by contrast.
I sometimes feel its a case of what came first the chicken or the eggMy local tesco took a hit when Morrisons opened but now when you enter its half empty....handful of staff...lots of space in the carpark...all of which I love.
But I can't help thinking if it felt more inviting, had more staff...lick of paint...bit of music at least...it would attract the customers back...rather than the snowball approach of scaling down.

Is that town side of North Bridge Road, just by the bus station.
Yes. The labour club and the other building that I remember as the salvation army thing were demolished for the new part of the frenchgate or whatever its called . Pic taken from same place as above just further over. Still cant see the baths. I remember them knocking all those buildings down and leaving the baths for a while.

ever mind that, I'm surprised no one made them build a store in Cheadle to stop the locals driving their horse and carts down the A50.
ETA You can just make out the horse & cart in the top of vehicle exclusions: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.976138,-2.098333...
I think there's only one regular with a horse and cart in Cheadle who actually uses it on the road Suppose he's no worse than the other horsey types around here though.ETA You can just make out the horse & cart in the top of vehicle exclusions: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.976138,-2.098333...

I remember all that before the new Bus station/frenchgate was built. Looks really strange looking back at it now.I remember them knocking all those buildings down and leaving the baths for a while.

I think I'm more surprised that someone lives in the same village as me

Somebody has too.But yes, Charlie probably will have his margins cut so his business isn't viable anymore.
I'm from london originally, i enjoy the car shows at the Sharnbrook and a decent drive to Northampton too, a nice road.
Reckon Tesco will be a winner in Clapham, opens tomorrow.
I passed it earlier after walking the dogs and saw a 'click and collect' sign in the window and thought that's going to be useful.
Some Clapham residents have a £3 off a £10 shop voucher that was sent through the post...though not all. Possibly only those with clubcards.
I've lived in the village for 30 years...and like it

The Chatham one was meant to close when Gillingham opened, but they kept it open for some reason. My mum has worked there for over 25 years, so looks like redundancy for her.
I live up Chatham Hill, so generally go there or Hempstead Valley Sainsburys. Always found it dead quiet and with massively wide aisles, which suits my hatred of the locals around here. The car park is council owned and run, nothing yo do with Tesco, but Tesco own the store part and the furniture store next door, so guess it's worth a few bob.
I live not far from the Gillingham Store, but I do venture into Chatham fairly often over the last 4 years I've lived there, but I had no idea there was a tescos there!I live up Chatham Hill, so generally go there or Hempstead Valley Sainsburys. When I heard it was for the chop I asked my wife about it she says the council owned carpark and the poor exterior state of the store probably didn't help as it needed a lot of money spent on it.
Shame your Mums lost her job, not the best way into the new year.

Thanks. Not quite how I remember it but I was quite young. I remember my dad telling me he used them. ( probably for a bath more than a swim) I used to go to the other one near the other bus station with school. It was a cool old building. Not sure if they are still there. I don't go in the center much. Every time I do its all different.
