I donated a tenner the other night. It's amazing when people club together for something like this, the poor old fella deserves it!

I know I'll get flamed for this but when I saw Katie Cutlers profile picture I thought, "Mmmm, pretty girl with a heart of gold", then I saw the video of her meeting Alan Barnes and thought, "She's a big girl......"
Remember,he's only a little boy.biggrin

Good luck to the old fella.

Hope whoever attacked him stumbles into a hungry wood chipper.

4 year sentence. I can't imagine he'll be popular in prison.

There's nothing prisoners like more than to feel someone is lower than them

"segregated for his own safety"

fk that, stick him with everyone else and see how tough he is. Prison should be a deterrent to stop you doing st like this in the first place and if you are still daft enough to try and rob a disabled person you should be on your own with the punishment and not coddled like you are a special case.

So, he gets beaten up, should have thought about that before.

I think putting him in general population would be a death sentence, not just a beating.

I have a lot of respect for Alan Barnes. He was so genuinely humbled by the public response. A really touching story.

From the BBC report:

After the sentencing, Mr Barnes said it was "just about the right length of time" and he hoped prison would give Gatiss time to reflect on what he had done.

"I hope while he's in prison he'll do some thinking and when he comes out he'll do something useful," he said.

I very much doubt Gatiss is in danger in prison. Lowlife criminals will treat him like a king, he'll have adulation and respect from the other prisoners. They seem to afford respect based on how deviant and dastardly the crime was.

He was segregated whilst on remand, so I expect this was for his own safety.

A further twist to the tale:

http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-new...

As part of the fund raising, Katie Cutler employed the services of a PR manager, but rather than taking the bill out of the proceeds of £330k, the full amount raised went to Alan Barnes.

Now the bailiffs are chasing Katie for £6687, which she can't pay. Maybe she was ill advised to employ the agent, but remember, this was just a local young woman who put herself out to help another, for no personal gain to herself.

To top it off, Alan's suggested someone sets up a fundraising cause to help her out. He'll donate a tenner into the cause, as he doesn't like to show off!!

I cant see any reason why he wouldn't even offer to stump up most, if not all of the cash.

That's a strange attitude.

And now he doesn't even want the house - he wants to move to Shetland and find a job in the church in order to "fulfill his calling from god".

Jeez! If someone gave me £330k and then explained that their ability to raise it in the first place was down to a £6k+ PR campaign, that they now needed to pay for, I'd be handing them the cash to pay the bill. I wouldn't be able to sleep if I didn't! Very odd.

Whilst she had good intentions, is she not just another naïve do-gooder ?

Employing the services of a PR firm was never going to be free, and you cant just ignore bills.

That said even I would be able to give more than a tenner towards the bill that she incurred in helping me.....
