Cancer sufferer labeled 'sick freak'
Discussion
Read this letter in the local paper that came through my door last night and it sickened and saddened me in equal measure.
Didn't know what a 'booby hat' was so Googled it and saw the story had hit The Independent.

What the fk is wrong with some people?

Hm. There are two separate issues here, I think. Wearing a hat that some may consider offensive is one (yes, it's just a breast but some people may consider it offensive even if it is completely natural so you have to expect a negative reaction). Cancer awareness is the other. There are better ways of raising awareness of cancer eg making the wearing of headscarves normal (I do wear a buff tied like a headscarf if it's not too cold as some of my students wear a headscarf due to chemo side effects).
Edit: obviously, the woman who called the cancer patient a sick freak is a tool.

It's not even a particularly realistic breast - just a bobble hat with a very small bobble. I would have to have been told what it was. If someone has that much of a problem with nipples they have substantially more serious issues than people wearing novelty hats.Edit: obviously, the woman who called the cancer patient a sick freak is a tool.

Attention seeker (by her own admission) doesn't get quite the reaction she was hoping for (if it happened) and then posts her story for more attention?
Are you for real? I've just responded to two of your posts - no I'm not picking on you - you come across as a real knob making comments like that. The poor woman has cancer, and someone tells her she should stay indoors until she stops looking like a sick freak! It brings tears of hurt to the woman, and she writes a letter explaining how she feels, and you call her an attention seeker!! Mind you, I would guess that it's just the sort of thing you would say.

The irony is strong in you name calling;)
The poor woman having cancer doesn't stop her being a person with foibles and quirks like all of us.

How have you managed to interpret 'I was hoping the hat would encourage people to talk to me, so I could explain and raise awareness of the importance of knowing and checking your own breasts' as attention seeking?

How is it not? When my daughter lost her hair she wore a wig, she chose the style of wig then got her hair cut to a similar style so that when her hair fell out and she stated wearing the wig fewer people would notice. Many who knew her didn't notice at all.
It was of course her choice, just like this woman chose to wear the tit hat.
But her choice certainly indicates to me that she wanted attention.
BTW I think it is a made up or at least vastly exaggerated story.
Well at least you have the decency to explain your reasoning as to why you consider the wearing of a 'tit' hat to be attention seeking. Describing someone as an 'Attention seeker' is regarded as a derogatory term, and in the context of this story, is a pretty insensitive thing to say isn't it?
If someone had discovered you're daughter was wearing a wig, and had told her to stay at home until she stopped looking like a 'sick freak', I reckon you and your daughter would be pretty upset, and If you described the event on here, and someone said "well she's a vain bh for wearing a wig", and other people supported that view, I think you would have something to say them wouldn't you? The issue here is that some nasty person felt it was OK to tell a cancer sufferer to stay at home until she stopped looking like a 'sick freak'.
Cancer is a nasty thing, and I hope you're daughter has fully recovered.

How is it not?Reducing her to merely her cancer and just an object of sympathy is pathetic.

How is it not?You don't.
That's fine.
