I have said for two years that this is probably the last chance the GOP will EVER have of putting a republican in the White House. Demographics are moving against them and there are enough dem states locked up to make the path near on impossible, even for a good GOP candidate. Whoever the candidates are the democrat starts with a pretty solid 242 electoral votes. The GOP start with a much smaller base and there are about 9 swing states. The rationale for the GOP is that if Cruz is the candidate the map stays pretty much like 2012, maybe he loses an extra state or two on the margins. He loses but the base turns out so the down ticket is not damaged too badly. If Trump is the candidate who knows? He could lose Arizona, he could lose Virginia, he could lose Indiana even. Or it could be much worse! But crucially they could suffer badly down ticket as the true republican base just doesn't turn up. It's why people like Mike Pence cling to Ted Cruz even as the Cruz liner is sinking!

There was a court case filed in CA (dismissed yesterday) by a girl who claimed that Trump raped her when she was 13, aided and abetted by Prince Andrew's mate Jeffrey Epstein. Too many times in American politics I've assumed that someone was 'done'. I really wouldn't write Trump off, especially as he's not going to be running against an overly charismatic opponent, but Hillary Clinton. For the 'leader of the free world' America is surprising not very democratic and stranger things have happened (think Bush/Florida).The GOP did seem to completely lack the seriousness of Trump at the outset, and they also failed to really put forward a good opponent to him - Cruz was a disaster and I'm surprised he got this far.

Republican candidates up and down the country are trying to work out how they can somehow distance themselves from the nominee. Meanwhile there's talk of a 3rd party candidate and a "republicans for Clinton" movement firing up.

In a two party system the parties don't tend to disappear, they evolve.
Anyway it looks like it will be Trump vs Clinton in November and whether you like or loath Trump it is hard to deny that gives voters a real choice about real issues.

I was wrong about Obama getting elected - but that's because I ignored the golden rule: Two terms. It seems to me for a long old while that a President gets his two terms and then, when forced to choose a new President, the American voter goes for the "other" party and it is change and change about.
