Well put. I see the Reps argument as being a fundamentally selfish one on this issue. I'm rich, I'm alright, it's your fault you're not rich and not alright.

For something as fundamental as basic health care the lottery of who your parents were is a harsh way to decide if someone gets to live. Equally we cannot trust to unregulated capitalism to provide for all.
The GOP's attitude is that if you are unemployed your lazy, sucking up on benefits and a loser, therefor you don't deserve healthcare............that's from what has come out of their mouths. Dems want to raise taxes to pay for said insurances and of course the "wealthier" pay more in tax?

Its like watching a dog chase its tail.

America is v different to Europe though on it's inherent attitudes. The pioneer man stands on his own two feet is a deeply ingrained cultural norm over there. They have only themselves to blame however for a large black population that DOESNT have that background and in fact a very different and recent one which is founded in being slaves 3 generations ago, a "free" sub species 2 generations ago, uneducated poverty nobody's just one generation ago. America has a brutal social legacy to resolve in it's cultural standpoint.
The second aspect is the insurance industry. Quite simply the ACA has been raped to buggery by it and the costs unfairly then passed on with, as usual, the middleish mob getting the rawer deal. That is provoking a fair amount of the grief, that such a thing is perceived as unfair. But again, unfair against what?

I have some sympathy with Obamacare, I have a great deal of sympathy with ordinary punters who are mugged over by it due to it's implementation.

Who has been mugged by it? Millions who previously had no access to insurance now have it. The majority like me who are in company schemes are still in company schemes. The poor are covered by Medicaid and their situation is unchanged.

The only people who have arguably been adversely affected are those who previously had substandard policy's that no longer comply. So you paid premiums for a policy that wouldn't pay out if you were sick and you've been forced to move to a policy with no pay out ceiling which costs a little more? So what.

Little I disagree with Rand Paul in the grand context of things.

He holds some old school views on things like abortion and same sex marriage but other than that he appears quite a sensible chap.

Depends how you read it.

I saw it as Rand is running. Expect plenty more crazies to announce in the coming months. 2 distinct ideas. But I can see how you have a different reading of it.

He seems the least batst crazy out of them.

Batzhit crazy is a relative term when you're talking about republican politicians. Good old Randy is not as batzhit crazy as say Palin or Bachmann but then who is? He does have his moments of lucidity such as when he wrote an article for Time magazine in the wake of Ferguson but for every one of those there's a whacko belief like linking vaccines to autism. He's Ron Paul light basically and has little chance of getting anywhere but he'll bring colour to the fight and he'll square up to other tea baggers like Cruz and Pence (if the latter even runs now after the humiliation of last week).

And when Ted talk about faith he means Christians. The religious right don't have too much time for other faiths.

Looks like Pence has decided not to run after being humiliated last month over the Religious Rights act in Indiana. Shame, he's a nasty right wing religious bigot and it would have been good to keep him in for a while. Also if he had run he wouldn't have been able to run for re-election in Indiana.

As for the Indiana laws, they don't go far enough. Business owners should be allowed to serve whoever they like or don't like for whatever reason.

So businesses can turn away blacks if they don't like them, or Jews, or Muslims, or just gays?

Anyone. Of course those businesses won't make as much money as ones who sell their goods to anyone who can afford them, (just like the customers shouldn't be forced to buy from a supplier they don't like for whatever reason).

Besides, its better that people who hold racist or homophobic views actually suffer a penalty for them isn't it? If we force them to sell then they get the money and have no penalty for those views and no incentive to change their beliefs.

What a stupid comment. Discrimination is always wrong and this country (USA) is not so far removed from the days when it was legal to discriminate against blacks. We will not go backwards.
