An outspoken critic of Putin apparently, could it all kick off domestically in Russia? Is Boris Nemtsov this century's Franz Ferdinand.

Russia is not a proper state but just an organised crime enterprise, no doubt there will be the usual Putin apologists arriving soon to say this was a bizarre suicide.

As you say, the usual Putin-frottage fans will doubtless be along shortly.

But it does raise questions as to how secure Putin's power-base is, if he now finds it necessary to start blatantly executing his domestic political opposition.

so out of the whole Moscow he is symbolically killed right in front of Kremlin? Well if the man in control of 8000 nuclear warheads is that stupid then we are in trouble, big trouble.

"President Putin has assumed "personal control" of the investigation into the killing, said his spokesman Dmitry Peskov."

"US President Barack Obama condemned the "brutal murder" and called on the Russian government to conduct a "prompt, impartial and transparent investigation"."

Demonstration of absolute control and power - no need to fear the authorities.

From Sky News:

'According to colleagues, he was working on a report which apparently included concrete evidence that Russia was directly involved in the separatist movement which erupted in Ukraine last year.'

Need we say anymore....?

Why stupid? He is accountable to no-one, so has nothing to fear from doing this.

I know. You really could not f*cking make it up.

Putin wouldn't have had to give a direct order for this. I think there must be a department within the FSB (which Putin was Director of in 1998 after a long career in the KGB) who's sole purpose in life is to 'deal' with anyone or anything that is seen as a possible threat to the man-at-the-tops Presidency. They just go around picking people off, for a living.

A bit like Henry II and Thomas Becket perhaps.
"Who will rid me of this turbulent priest"
"Someone killed him? Nothing to do with me."

From reading some comments on the granuiad it's a false flag operation by the CIA and the ukrainian fascists.

This assassination by Putin's goons is astonishingly blatant. Nemtsov was murdered right outside the Kremlin walls, on Moscow's equivalent of Westminster Bridge. Unbelievable.

The comments in the Grauniad are equally extraordinary. There is a long and dishonourable tradition on the British left of 'useful idiots', as Stalin called them, who are so blinded by hatred of America that they will try to justify anything Russia does.

Prepared to bet that within the next 48 hours they will have arrested a number of people from the one of the below groups

A. A few Muslims that will be purported to be linked to some radical Russian islamist group
B. A few Ukrainians that have supposed links to the central Ukrainian government and will be purportedly trying to destabilise Russia

Would imagine that the evidence is already there and in place and that confessions will come quickly from the paraded group, these confessions derived by giving them a simple choice, cushy life in Jail for a number of years or a bullet through your head now.

Guess what, the people will buy into it hook line and sinker and the Russian press will certainly not counter it and will no doubt whip the masses into a frenzy of nationalism again over it

I'm sure you know he just gets his thugs to do his dirty work.

There was about to be a rally!

Good time to get rid of any opposition in it's tracks.

Whilst it seems unlikely, they did used to get up to all sorts of things along those lines in the post war period.

As a *former* admirer of Putin, I have perhaps kept track of stories concerning him a little more than others.

This book is astounding stuff. Well worth reading if time and effort concern one enough.

http://books.simonandschuster.com/Putins-Kleptocra...

Nobody would publish it in the UK, and I've read numerous reasons as to why, none of them pleasant . The authors sources are impeccable. The work shows what a murdering criminal thug Putin is.

A frightening tale.
