History seems to be repeating itself in Bangladesh. During their fight for independence in the 70s, intellectuals, students and academics amongst others were routinely butchered by religious extremists. Only recently have some of those perpetrators been brought before the courts.

Protests in Dhaka after Avijit Roy, whose blog championed liberal secular writing in the Muslim-majority nation, was attacked along with his wife

A prominent American blogger of Bangladeshi origin has been hacked to death with machetes by unidentified assailants in Dhaka, after he allegedly received threats from Islamists.

The body of Avijit Roy, founder of the Mukto-Mona (Free-mind) blog site – which champions liberal secular writing in the Muslim-majority nation – was found covered in blood after an attack that also left his wife critically wounded.

“He died as he was brought to the hospital. His wife was also seriously wounded. She has lost a finger,” local police chief Sirajul Islam said.

The couple were on a bicycle rickshaw, returning from a book fair, when two assailants stopped and dragged them on to the pavement before striking them with machetes, local media reported, citing witnesses.

Not everyone believes in Freedom of Speech. But good to see protests occurring as a result.

Surely all believers are blasphemers to another religion.

(atheists most of all, believing in no god is one worse than believing in one god)

I think that's the clinching argument with Islam. When you read the Quran you realise there isn't much question as to what views an obedient Muslim is supposed to entertain. Luckily many Muslims, like most Christians, have little interest in implementing the Quran in any absolute manner.

However the outlook doesn't appear great for religion as education is improved etc.

EFA. Why do you think religious schools exist?

Surely being an atheist is better than believing in the "wrong" religion. I'd be upset if my wife left me, but I'd rather she left me because she was fed up with me and wanted to live alone rather than leaving me for another man.

Islam and Christianity share the same God. Just different front men.

Another blogger hacked to death, simply for expressing an opinion.

" Third atheist blogger killed in Bangladesh knife attack

Police say Ananta Bijoy Das was attacked in Sylhet city, months after fellow bloggers Avijit Roy and Washiqur Rahman were murdered

A secular blogger has been hacked to death in north-east Bangladesh, the third such deadly attack this year."

Only unless you really have to, and then it's ok. Bacon Sarnie on a cold, wet morning? If that's not necessity, I don't know what is.

'He has made unlawful for you that which dies of itself and blood and the flesh of swine and that on which the name of any other than Allah has been invoked. But he who is driven by necessity, being neither disobedient nor exceeding the limit, then surely, Allah is Most Forgiving, Merciful.'

Blogger number 4 dead.

A Bangladeshi blogger known for his atheist views has been hacked to death by a gang armed with machetes in the capital Dhaka, police say.

Niloy Neel was attacked at his home in the city's Goran area.

He is the fourth secularist blogger to have been killed this year by suspected Islamist militants in Bangladesh.

Imran H Sarkar, head of the Bangladesh Blogger and Activist Network, told the BBC that Mr Neel had been an anti-extremist voice of reason.

"He was the voice against fundamentalism and extremism and was even a voice for minority rights - especially women's rights and the rights of indigenous people," he said.

BBC World Service South Asia editor Charles Haviland says that, like previous victims, Mr Neel was not only secular but atheist and, like two of the others, he was from a Hindu, not a Muslim, background.

Go to backwards, third-world, religiously dominated country, with a known record of hacking atheist preachers to death, and start preaching against their religion.....

Darwin award anybody?

I'll bite. Where does the people of the book (and the rest of the similarities) come from?

Its all made up, with various bits copied from various religions. The bits copied are often the popular bits that suck people in.

I thought 'they' were only banned from eating pork where the animal died through disease or injury rather that killed for eating. I used to help out in a butcher's shop, and I can tell you that pork is an odd meat. There would be cysts to cut out before it was sold, and some quite large. I put me off everything but bacon for some time. I couldn't eat a sausage for some years.

If a pig dies in the street then I'd suggest not eating it. No, really. I reckon it is best to leave it alone. Driven by necessity? Well, if you've got a car, drive somewhere else.

A bit unfair - 3 of the 4 who were killed were Bangladeshi and even the American was born in Bangladesh. Darwin award or brave? I'd go for latter. They were not throwing their views in anyones face, it was only a blog ffs.
