Ok, not read the entire mahoosive thread (apologies), but all I'd say is that he'd work well with the other two.

I can just see him giving a piece to camera, followed by a retort from James or Richard, and they'd either get a Black Adder retort or a Mister Bean look.

In the mould of Jack Dee, just a look or a well placed backhanded comment is all it takes to create comedy genious, and great TV.

Rowan wouldn't have to reinvent himself too much at all (we know he's got the passion for cars), and we'd be all laughin' in the ailes,
including them, which is what makes the show!

I'd say it would work.

Hell, I'd even start watchin' again..

The problem is he's not a comedian, he's a good comedy writer and actor. He's also quite a private introverted person so I can't see him just doing funny stuff on the fly.

Might I suggest a left field entry?

Rowan Atkinson.

He'd bring a new dimension all of his own, and he'd work well with the other two.

Top Gear would become a right laugh again for sure! smile

He's a comedy actor, much like Steve Coogan.

Quite!

Lennie Henry is the same.

Back in 1986 my company booked up a Lenny Henry show at Blazers in Windsor.

What a disappointment!

The man was clearly not a comedian. In fact, he gave the audience a twenty minute lecture on animal rights in the middle of his act!

However, he is a very fine actor, and he can play comedy roles. He can also do Shakespeare.

Atkinson is also a superb actor. That doesn't mean that he could host Top Gear.

My gut feel is that we will have one more series of Top Gear. It will fail, and then get dropped.

The BBC will try to tell us that we are not as interested in cars as we used to be.

Rowan Atkinson is a horrible choice. Watch any of his interviews, he is introverted and extremely quiet.

I'm not sure Top Gear's real life. A funny actor sounds ideal.

That's been my take for a while. They'll get some Guardian approved team in, it'll fail dismally and they'll bin it. However the BBC having had its licence fee slashed will suddenly realise that Clarkson and co with their £50m income worldwide is a wonderful idea and off we go again.

Bit of a non story that.
He's done nothing more than to go in for a day or two to record some voice over links to join the old unused footage together for the final show

"Sad little fecker" is a bit strong no? Not sure how sad you can be with one of the best V12's ever made sitting inside one of the best cars ever made sitting in your garage. I'd have a perma smile so big Disney land would be working out a way to bottle it.

Rowan Atkinson, and to some extent Steve Coogan and Kevin Eldon are not comedians per se but are comic actors ... some people struggle with these definitions...

And some of the Eldon stuff on the radio sounds like rehashes of Jam/Blue Jam.

Chris Morris in Paxman mode could work, with withering sideways glances at the camera?

The Bomb Dogs sketch is a bit like the propensity they have on TG to blow stuff up.

add of course the fact that mobile internet radio is now a more appealing method of delivery ... and that's 'free' for the broadcaster to deliver
There's a view that forgets how much the internet costs for a media streaming business.

but it's not scaled by the number of listeners is it ?

it doesn;t matter if you have one thousand, ten thousand , one million or 5 million listeners , your costs are getting your content from the studio to your ISP ...

compared to getting licences and paying rental for sites and services in a conventional or DAB set up
