There's a view that forgets how much the internet costs for a media streaming business.
but it's not scaled by the number of listeners is it ?

it doesn;t matter if you have one thousand, ten thousand , one million or 5 million listeners , your costs are getting your content from the studio to your ISP ...

compared to getting licences and paying rental for sites and services in a conventional or DAB set up
In many ways it's worse - a direct link to the number of downloaders, equals the amount needed to be uploaded...

As opposed to paying to broadcast, and anyone in the catchment of the signal gets it 'for free'.

What's the score with the rumours of the three of them filming in Manchester? Heard from a colleague at work but can't find anything?

I believe he's saying that where in conventional broadcast there isn't a directly proportional link between the number of content consumers and the cost to distribute the content; stick a mast up in Scotland and you might only get two new consumers, but the same mast in the south east might cost you a similar amount and get you 000s more. With internet streaming though, short of corner cases where, e.g. multicast is possible for some use cases under special arrangements, your costs of distributing content are likely directly linked to the number of people downloading (or at least, how much they download). Youtube don't have BT "unlimited" internet connection.

It's the cost to 'service' all the listeners/viewers. You pay to have your content hosted somewhere, and it's the number of downloads/streamers from that point that you have to pay for.

To support more downloads, the hosting company will need to invest in servers, links/additional bandwidth. Therefore the hosting company will expect you to pay more.

Multicast would be great for a 'live' stream(*), but I think most consumers would want on-demand(*2).

(*) something like Eurosport did for their excellent Le Mans coverage over the weekend smile

(*2) Can Multicast be used for on-demand too?

No. Closest you can get is like Sky do (or at least used to) for some movies where they'd have start times every n hours. Only really works though if you're expecting enough people want to watch it and wait for the start time.

And, multicast doesn't just work over the internet, it requires substantial amount of work to go on behind the scenes.

ETA: That work is contractual as well as technical, per-ISP and is pointless if the end users don't share the same network paths.

For what it's worth, the new Forza game will carry on its association with Top Gear as they did with Forza 5 having Clarkson Hammond and May doing voice over intros, and Stig driving challenges. No Clarkson this time for Forza 6, just Hammond, May and Stig.

He said he wasn't interested ...! Turncoat.

He's to host 'a new line up' apparently. So who are the other two..?

I swear I saw an advert today, with JC driving a car (possibly a clip from previous year) then a 'Top Gear: Coming Soon' message.

It was confusing!

That's just an episode to use up all the remnants of the already filmed pre-steak exploits.

He's certainly got form for letting things overwhelm him; but as a front man he just might work.

They can always get stand-ins for Radio 2 and the One Show if required. Top Gear is the priority - it's the big payer.
