So you would actually do your best to kill someone who lunged at you with a screwdriver or similar-sized weapon (eg smashed beer bottle)? There's a world of difference between defending yourself and ending someone's life.

They could easily have shot him in the leg, the arm etc rather than numerous shots to the body.
No they could not. sorry but this is an urban myth grown around to many hollywood movies.

They are trained, as are all that handle guns, to aim for the centre of the visible mass.

I'm with the police on this one...

They asked him to drop the screwdriver, you can hear them plead as his mum yell's at him.

If someone lunges at me with a screwdriver, I will defend myself.
Agree with you on this one.

Unfortunate, but the guy had a chance. Those of you who are suggesting the Police could have shot him somewhere else or it's only a screwdriver don't really have a grasp of how little time you have to defend yourself in these situations. The Police are trained with guns and that's what happened. They're blameless. You want to challenge American cultural norms and beliefs and change the American psyche? Because you'll need decades to firstly rid America of guns and then adapt Police methods accordingly.

Surely there would be a process in place to protect everyone as much as possible.

Phone call: Mentally ill? Check, Off his medication? Check, Threats of violence? Check.

OK what's the reasonable response? Approach with caution, back off if the situation escalates, talk, communicate and de-escalate.

What actually happened? Knock on the front door, shout, pull gun, shout, lung, shoot. It's so predictable it's almost fascicle.

In the UK incidents like this happen to officers on a daily basis and very rarely is a taser discharged never mind anyone dying or becoming hospitalised.

Unfortunately the US is doomed to repeat this mistake over and over and over. Partly because of poor training but mostly because of the ridiculous situation with access to firearms.

your only kidding yourself...

You do not remove your best chance of defence to something less effective. You end the situation as quickly as possible.
Lethal force in the UK uses the more strict "absolutely necessary" criteria. Armed police training would look to less lethal options in such circumstances.

(I'm keeping it simple and disregarding authorities and deployment criteria for those in the know).

Yes I would have put him down as quickly as possible... I would not take a smidgen of a chance he could land a blow.

It's not cowardess, it's not bravery, it's just a cold fact
Call it what you like it's an overreaction and therefore indefensible under UK law, in the States you'd be a hero cop in the UK you'd be a very unpopular prisoner.

Sorry Mrs djc206 I regret to inform you that your husband was killed on duty this afternoon after he was stabbed multiple times in the chest.

An inquest ruled that had Officer djc206 and his colleague aimed for centre mass as they had been trained to do, he would still be alive today.

Officer djc206 leaves behind a widow with 3 children....

Would you really get into a tussle with this man when he lunges at you with a deadly weapon?

Stabbed in the chest with a blunt instrument whilst wearing a stab vest. I hope my employers seek a refund

OK I will bite!

"bypassed officer’s stab vest"! And the point is that stab vests are not a guarantee of safety when attacked with a stabbing instrument. A screwdriver can easily avoid the vest and penetrate the person. The fact that a "large hunting knife" managed would indicate that a screwdriver would be even easier!

I would also point out that the officer was lucky. You seem disappointed that he survived?

Did you intentionally skip over the parts where it says "large combat knife" and that he had already stabbed 3 other people. Apples and oranges.

Don't worry the worst you'll get is a broken arm from a nightstick and or sore eyes from the pepper spray, get those tools out!
