Going back to the supposed video of the final seconds....apparently bild newspaper are adamant it is genuine.

Is said video still able to be viewed online? Ive a morbid urge to want to view it for some reason.

Where are they claiming they got it from?

Memory card at the crash site, some vile person has stolen it and sold it to the press.

There was a version of it on YouTube last night, not nice viewing it as you can imagine although somewhat tempered by the news that it might be fake.

One quick question. If he planned to kill himself and everyone on board, why did he use the oxygen mask?

Conceivably, whilst still at altitude, someone in the back could have deliberately caused a cabin depressurisation - taken a crowbar to one of the windows for example. Had he not been on oxygen, and lost conciousness, then it may have been possible to gain access to the flight deck once the door entry veto timeout had elapsed. He was just removing any last influence the folk outside the flight deck might have had over him. Or maybe he just had a thing about oxygen masks.

I would guess it was something as simple as wanting to see the job through to ensure his end was met in the way he planned.

Is it not possible to program the flight control computers in such as way as to prevent a controlled descent into the ground?

Should be possible to hook up the GPS to the altimeter and autopilot, so the a/c knows its elevation over the ground, and any high features coming up, and automatically prevents the a/c descending to an unsafe altitude.

?

I may be wrong but I'm under the impression anything which has appeared on YouTube is an obvious fake - the press are still adamant that "their" video is authentic.

Technically yes, of course it is, but once again what happens when there's a legitimate need to do it?

Phone a friend for authorisation?

When would there be a legitimate need to fly into the ground?

Yes, that's almost certainly the case. Once published I doubt they would say they got it wrong and pull it as its all about the page impressions.

I knew someone would say that. Not too difficult to program the system to know the difference between a runway and a mountain...

Accurately enough to tell for sure between runway and smashing it into the terminal building at the last second?

In an emergency situation - planes don't always land on runways - it's rare but it's not as rare as a pilot wanting to crash the plane.

if you have a fire on board you might only have 20mins to get it on the ground/water or a bird strike on take off like the Hudson river event. What about an all engine failure or if it runs out of fuel? There are plenty of reasons that make your plan less safe than the rare event of pilots trying to crash on purpose.

There are plenty of other controls levers and switches that could result in the aircraft crashing regardless of your computer that won't let it be intentionally flown into the Alps.

The Spanish (Portuguese?) pilot Francisco Narla wrote a novel 'Caja Negra' (black box) five years ago, in which he depicted a co-pilot blocking the cockpit door and crashing the 'plane. A pity EASA didn't read it!
