If Mr-someone-else-wrote-that-and-I-didn't-know is unable to continue, for whatever reason, how about Helmer?

This idea that UKIP's failure to win Stoke means that as a party they are finished is a little premature perhaps.

I can think of another party, that reached a zenith some years ago, and have signally failed to expand beyond a single MP: the Greens.

Why are they not constantly being accused of being in terminal decline, having failed utterly to make a break through?

Are they just not seen as a threat? I suppose with Corbyn positioning Labour where he is, they aren't in danger of eating away at his left flank.

I should add, having looked at the tone of this thread, that I have never voted UKIP. And apologies if anyone has made this comparison before, I've not read back.

I feel a new party is getting closer to being formed by the day.

"If Nuttall doesn’t professionalise it and toss out the likes of Douglas Carswell and the rest of the Tory cabal then the party is finished anyway."

"Mr Banks said unless he is made chairman he will quit and invest his millions in a new, rival political movement that will “destroy” Ukip"

Hmm. What is the one thing Banks mentions he fears May will not deliver on?

Its not me going on Radio 4 and banging on about the same old thing.

Farage and Banks are totally obsessed by it, Farage talks about "our real friends talking English", feeling uncomfortable around foreigners. It is non-stop.

You pick me up for picking it up - but its incessant, 24/7 foreigner bashing from Banks and Farage.

UKIP - The Future. Its clear what the future is - even more strident anti-foreigner nastiness.

So how is "controlled immigration ( treating the worldwide equally) rather than discriminate "anti-foreigner nastiness"?

What a sad, pathetic person you are... not radio 4 perhaps but by fk you do keep trying to bang the same old racist drum on here.......but like the boy who cried wolf, most have sussed you out and tend to either ignore or tease you.

ps 17 -10 to England now....bloody racist English rugby players picking on the poor Italians.

Crying wolf? As if.

If it quacks like a duck (all day every day in the media) it is a duck.

Fed up with this "oh I want fair non-discriminatory immigration for the whole world".

Do us all a favour. No-one is fooled.

It just reinforces what the tired cliche is clearly trying to hide.

Can Carswell defect back to the Conservatives easily enough?

Wouldn't surprise me if he switched back to the Tories once Article 50 is announced, on the grounds that his work in UKIP is done and the party now wants to go in a different direction.

Good move, chuck out the only kipper who managed to get elected last time round. A party less riddled with thickos would listen to him rather than try to kick him out.

UKIP and Labour are a fantastically entertaining double act at the moment.

Honest Q...Has he really been of much benefit to UKIP?

IMO Banks is looking for an excuse to form a new party and neither Carswell or Reckless are part of his plans.

I dont disagree with any of that and I dont think he has been of any benefit to UKIP. I think it is more the fault of UKIP than Carswell though. I think UKIP were a different organisation when he joined, they seemed a more libertarian, small government kind of movement. Now they look like they are pandering to the narrow-minded ex-labour voters they seem to be exclusively targetting now.

Biggest problem for UKIP is, assuming May doesn't fudge Brexit, that they have lost their USP (Independence from the EU) and don't have another rallying cry (and dare I say charismatic leader) to get behind.
