HSBC headquarters to relocate from London to Birmingham

"The headquarters of the personal and business arm of HSBC bank will relocate from London to Birmingham, it has been announced.
The bank said about 1,000 jobs will be transferred from the UK capital as part of the move, starting in mid-2017."

My initial reaction was good news for Brum but it seems a bit unfair on the existing employees having to relocate.

One of my friends moved to Brum recently as an analyst with Deutsche.

Swapped her two bed Farringdon flat for a 5+ bed house in a couple of acres out near Bridgnorth somewhere.

Loves it.

Nope it won't be the Investment bank or Corporate as they will find it very difficult to impossible to actually get anyone to relocate.

Retail is a bit easier to find staff, but the quality is just not there in Birmingham, the Scottish bank staff in Birmingham that I used to consult for are fking shocking and have difficulties knowing their arse from their elbow.

I have lived in West Sussex, currently on the South Downs, for the last twenty five years and I love it. But if the opportunity came to move back to the West Midlands I wouldn't think twice.

Maybe you'd want to take your blinkers off?

To be honest, my ex's mother lived in Harborne and I always used to enjoy going there and your money would go a lot further...

Don't doubt that. We live in a relatively leafy part of London and really have no complaints, yet I'm sure I'd prefer living in just what you describe.

Trouble is that it is something of a one-way ticket. Your provincial house price won't rise as fast as prices in London, and more to the point, you probably won't want to move back. Which is likely to limit your career choices in something like banking a fair bit, I would have thought.

Certainly a 'one way trip' for anyone London based.

Anyone in HSBC would have to consider this - and have confidence that their employer would not then 'bin' them once relocated (relocation probably at their own expense given certain 'givens')

Notwithstanding that this type of execise should be to the benefit of all, the nature of the animal will be to exploit the move to the best advantage of those who make the decision.
