C'mon, there is not a snowballs chance in hell that he will be deported. It's an extreme case and will obviously be sorted out. His old mum is still alive and he has 3 British kids. This is just red meat for the knuckle dragging racists to get worked up about.
You'd hope so, right? But then, they fined his employer £15,000 so it doesn't sound like common sense is prevailing.unrepentant said:

Interesting, you think because people see things as unjust, that equates to racist.Oakey said:

Where do you draw the line between 'common sense' and the law?

When he leaves for a better life in America and takes his tax/future tax paying kids with him, do you think they will refund all the tax he wrongly paid over the last 40 years.
If I had the right to go and work in America I would be packed and ready within the hour, what's he still doing in a country that hates him.

Ah c'mon folks. Don't knock it. UK running true to form.
Just more evidence of a Nation excelling at getting far too many things quite simply wrong.
Plus need to make room for all those increasing numbers of incoming immigrants those we've entrusted the well being of the Nation for decades now have assured us are hugely beneficial.
You better believe it!
Right, I'm off to start up a sham marriage agency. Nice little earner. I'll be rich, no more aged MGs and Rovers for me. I'll be able to afford something exotic, like a new focus.

Is he not eligible for a UK passport by descent?
Interestingly I discovered that if I move back to the UK, despite holding a UK passport, being born in the UK to British parents, in many ways I would be regarded as an immigrant and not be eligible to receive some services. Changed recently as well. I guess I'll just have to tough it out here in the colonies .

Good riddance I say.
He sneaks in over here illegally aged 3, just because his mum happens to be British, and he sponges a free education, then steals one of our jobs for 30 + years. I bet he still can't speak a work of English. And who does he support when England play the USA at cricket?

Doesn't matter - think of the Home Office resources that have already been deployed to get it to this stage. At the earliest point, someone with have a brain cell should have lobbed the whole thing in the bin and got on with dealing with the proper scum that are ruining the UK.It's a sad reflection of the worker drones in public office.

Genius. So the 6,590 petitioners are 'knuckle dragging racists'?Utterly amazing statement!
While obviously a technicality it seems from the comments and reports elsewhere that he's been given numerous opportunities to sort his st out. If he would pull his finger out a bit and do whatever paperwork they want then I expect it would have been sorted as far back as 2007 when he was apparently flagged at immigration while re-entering the country. So it isn't like this situation has suddenly arisen in the last couple of months and it also appears he hasn't just been randomly picked on out of the blue for the sake of it.
"The 56-year-old, known as Carl to his family and friends, has an American passport but says he didn’t realise he needed British citizenship to stay in the country he calls home."
I don't know how often US passports need renewing but presumably its every 10 years or so like UK ones. So he's managed to keep up with the US renewals and that means he has to have been aware that there's been a question over his immigration status for some time.
I suspect there is only half the story being reported here. At best he and his employer have buried their heads in the sand and thought it would go away, at worst he's probably had UK immigration saying "US or UK mate, which do you want to be, choose one and stick to it" for some time and he's been somewhat on the unhelpful side about it for whatever reason, so they're digging in and playing it fully technical, which ultimately means bye bye.

I guess some people don't think about their immigration status - or assume because their spouse is British then they don't need one. Similar thing with my mum - born in Overseas Territories but didn't apply for a British passport - as my dad already had one. Then she had to then spend a number of years to go through the whole getting-a-British-passport thing. But as you say I don't understand how he managed to ignore it for some many years.kev1974 said:

100% this. "The 56-year-old, known as Carl to his family and friends, has an American passport but says he didn’t realise he needed British citizenship to stay in the country he calls home."

If something in a newspaper smells far fetched, it probably is and you're probably only getting half the story.
To avoid cries of our country being deemed racist, our rules need to be applied evenly irrespective of the apparent status of the individuals concerned. It seems that that is what is being done, and that with a little bit of personal accountability on this chap's behalf and his mum's decades ago it could all have been avoided.
I'd be feeding the press even more sensationalism by passing the costs of all of this onto the individuals too
Whether other people deserve deportation too is irrelevant as long as the prevailing rules are being applied equally.
