Intersting how this argument always seems to revolve around whether it's the banks at fault or the Govt.
I like to think that one day we will take responsibility for our own actions, the 'toxic debt' was created by those borrowing too much on the never never with little chance of repaying it...beause they needed a Rangie on the driveway.
I know that, you know that... government and the people borrowing couldn't accept that, then blame the banks for the lending... then decide to penalise people in the investment banks as they are all classed as bankers.I like to think that one day we will take responsibility for our own actions, the 'toxic debt' was created by those borrowing too much on the never never with little chance of repaying it...beause they needed a Rangie on the driveway.
Same people now come back and blame the banks again as they won't lend to them or they can't have 125% mortgages anymore.
I read somewhere that the government at the time put lots of pressure on the banks to lend as it's the publics right to have a property, even if they can't afford it.

Some people that actually DO know something above and (way) beyond the bks force-fed to us by the media. I am impressed.

Certainly, buying shares can be investing. If you do it with your own money.
Hedgies just pool groups of stocks and take risks with other people's money.
On the whole, they do no better than trackers. [/b]
So much for skill.

We need london money men or the place would be bankrupt, but that is a long way from thinking that just following people who work in a legalised gambling den is the right way for this country.
Why do people with minimal knowledge feel compelled to display their lack of knowledge on a public forum....?Edited by sidicks on Monday 30th March 17:04

If you make a put down, it helps if you let people know why you feel superior.
To those who understand the basics, the quotes in my previous post say all you need to know - do you think these jokers genuinely know what they are talking about as far as hedge funds are concerned?!sidicks said:

If you want to cheerlead them, you need to give examples of the good they bring. Since you are putting yourself forward as an expert, should not be hard.

I would say only the insiders know the truth about them.
Or investors that deal with hedge fund managers and can read a fund's prospectus etcPlus of course the assertion is that hedge funds are all similar when the range of strategies employed is vast.

Indeed, but I always find it helpful to have a clue what I'm talking about before I express disgust at something I don't remotely understand!NicD said:

It wasn't bloody car loans that caused the problem! I like to think that one day we will take responsibility for our own actions, the 'toxic debt' was created by those borrowing too much on the never never with little chance of repaying it...beause they needed a Rangie on the driveway.
It was the US mortgage market that caused the crash and predator lending that no sane bank would/should have engaged in on such a scale.
It was the greed of the UK banks for this foreign debt "asset" (CDO) not the UK mortgage books that caused the issue over here, that mistake was compounded by ridiculous lending in the business sector (with multiplies being, frankly just made up) + the purchasing of basically bankrupt foreign banks for billions that brought us to our knees not the UK private credit market.
Much was made of the "toxic" mortgages that NR and B & B held in the UK, but they have performed very well with low default rates under "UKAR" which was set up by the government to look after them (it's making them/us money)
So please forget that those white range rovers you see caused the financial crisis.

You're the one asking the questions and making the (false) claims about them!
Really, why don't you read your posts? I have no questions that you could answer. What I asked was for you to explain your 'put down' written as if you know what you are talking about.
And what false claims?

Well, you made me laugh, but not in a good way.
You do understand that the words you use actually have a standard meaning, they don't mean what ever you may think they do.
