Was watching it from the office here in Euston - lot of smoke!

Be interesting to know exactly what's gone pop. The old Post Office / BT deep level tunnel network runs through that part of town, so wonder if it's whatever is in that these days?

I think there is a large comms exchange there as well.

Nope. He's seen Millbands ahead in the polls and so has come to claim his throne.

Actually in all seriousness and without sounding a bit David Icke, wasn't the 7/7 attack described as an electrical fire at first?
You're correct, the media were saying that there has been a major electrical fault on the tube network.

I was working in a Hotel just off Southampton Row , which leads into Kingsway where the fire was , left about 3pm to join Southampton Row near Russell Sq heading south towards Waterloo Bridge saw the queue . and at same time heard on the radio about the fire did a swift “U” turn and headed out via Euston road , even so a 1hour journey turned into 3hrs , pity anyone stuck nearer the fire

Is it still burning? Judging from tweets from London Fire Brigade and others, it is, or was an hour ago. They ought to know!

I am wondering if this is why my (Virgin Media, West London) internet has been frustratingly st all afternoon.
Only certain sites - facebook and youtube for example - suggesting some sort of international routing problems.
Could be just coincidental.

Happened in Manchester a few years ago, http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/yourbusiness/28...

Some of the tunnels were meant to have been built as part of the Civil Defence precautions in the event of a nuclear strike.

There are conduit tunnels running either side of the tram tunnel, the one that is now partly converted to the Strand Underpass but partly disused, looks like one of those where the fire has started. You can see from the diagram the risk of it spreading to some basements.

My mrs is saying, according to her taxi driver home, that there is an illegal gambling den on Kingsway on a disused underpass which is where the fire started. Take of it what you will she really can't handle her booze.. rotate

Not the first time it's happened in recent years, assuming it is indeed an electrical fire :-

Utility Co's turned the power off so Fire Brigade to tackle fire. That was at 4pm, 3.5 hours after the fire started. There is going to be some serious damage down there.

Unlikely; there's a disused tram tunnel alright, but the bulk of it (the middle section) was converted into the Strand Underpass decades ago. The northern section is now a Crossrail building site, the southern section was a council depot for years and then it became the Buddha Bar, until they moved to Knightsbridge. Not sure what's in that section now, it may well be a gambling den if nothing else has opened up in there since Buddha Bar, but it's not near Kingsway where the fire was, and there's definitely no connection between the three sections as I've described above, the ramps down to and up from the bit that's now the Strand Underpass totally severed it into three distinct spaces.

More likely it was one of the separate cable tunnels shown in that nice cross section above.

I'm on Paternity leave at the moment, but this email went around work today (we're on Chancery Lane):

Dear Colleagues
After the power failure we experienced today I can confirm that all power has now been restored.
Tomorrow will therefore be considered a normal working day and the building will be open as normal, unless advised otherwise.

Ah well, just as well I'm off for another two weeks.

The whole of Kingsway was subject to a 'cut & cover' at the turn of the century, it's basically one big conduit.

I'm currently doing my nightshift from the comfort of my lounge, we've been told to expect the situation to continue for a while.
