There was an ex cop on LBC earlier wondering if the electrical outage/fire nearby could be connected.

I like the comments from the PH crime experts stating that no one knows what was stolen, it was all blood diamonds, guns and stolen gems, no one had insurance etc etc. hehe

Some of you watch far too many movies.
There was a jeweler on Radio 4 news at lunch time, he was interviewed while waiting outside the facility to find out if his boxes were affected. He was saying that a lot of the jewelers on the street put a lot of stuff in there rather than keep it in their shops overnight, as it reduces their annual insurance premium by as much as £25,000 a year.

Bbc news claimed earlier that a new hi tech alarm system had been fitted but had not yet been turned on.

Doh

They speculated inside information.

If anyone is after a cheap watch or a diamond ring for their missus or maybe a nice piece of jewellery for a special occasion just let me know. Some other 'items' also available, please pm enquiries if you're interested in those.

Keep it to yourselves though eh.

I'm looking forward to the PH Armchair Bank Robbers/Heisters (not sure which is appropriate) analysing the theft and suggesting how they probably would have done it differently.

I'd have struggled too. Especially getting the Minis up onto the roof.

Usually you'd use a four man team. One stays on the street and watches out for the civilians, zip tying anyone who get suspicious. For added safety you can stuff them inside a body bag and hide them in a dumpster. The second man disables any CCTV whilst your third and fourth men incapacitate any security guards and obtain security keys.

Once that's solved you rush on inside and scare the crap out of any staff. A blast to the ceiling with a shotgun usually shuts them up. Your third and fourth guys then zip tie the staff whilst one and two start on the vault. Once inside you get your enforcers with their grinders to start work on the boxes.

Usually, at around the time you're bagging your loot, that one lone civilian you overlooked walks into the scene and raises the alarm. Your getaway driver will then hightail it, promising to return when the coast is clear. Usually after you've murdered around 12,000 cops.

If you're really unlucky you end up with a Heat style shoot out in the middle of the city centre.

Just speaking from experience.

The point about insurance has been mentioned a fair bit in the media.

guardian said:
He said that like many of the depositors at Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Ltd, his property was uninsured. “Lots of people keep their jewellery here to reduce insurance costs,” he said, adding: “I just can’t believe it has happened.”

He expressed his disappointment that the vault’s security had been breached, adding that he had been told thieves had “broken through a wall and got in that way”.

“If you look at the website it says it is the safest place around, I’m extremely shocked. There is a double door before you even get to the vault.”

Another client, Norman Bean, said he had £35,000 of uninsured jewellery, including a large diamond. Asked how he felt when he found out the news he said: “I was devastated, I was shaking. I couldn’t believe it.”

Mr Miller is among scores of jewellers waiting to hear from police about whether or not theirs was among the boxes plundered at Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Company in London's most exclusive jewellery district.

He said he was not insured, adding: "They don't offer insurance so I am hoping mine wasn't broken into. This could mean £40,000 or £50,000 for me. I don't know if it's there or not.

He said he had spoken to one security guard who told him he had checked the building on Friday after an alarm sounded.Mr Bean said: 'He went downstairs, looked through the door, through the windows and couldn't see anything and came out again, that was it. 'I said well "why didn't you open up and have a look in?" He told me he doesn't get paid enough.

According to the telegraph they got through an 18" thick steel door.

That sounds awfully thick for a steel door?

No idea.

I guess the difference in breaking in is in the thickness of the steel. 18" of solid steel vs 18" thick with 1" plates with filler?
