Yep we had a 7.1 but it was the 6.3 that done all the damage & killed people.
Anything over a mid 5 is trouble
My daughter-in-law was the earthquake correspondent for a Japanese TV company. After an eruption she would go there, by plane normally, and report.Anything over a mid 5 is trouble
She reckons that the aftershocks can be very damaging as any buildings might have been weakened by the original one and so what looked as if it was safe turns out to be a death trap.
People would also be helping survivors in damaged areas and the aftershocks put them at risk.
My son went out to Japan and experienced a largish earthquake. He said it was the most terrifying experience of his life. Primeval in its effects on him.

I remember this well - as it turns out I was on the toilet and the shake made me airborne from it and fall to the floor. My mother thought our boiler had just blown up so we were rushing out of be house.
It seemed to last a very long time - though probably was very short
Saw,briefly ,the Daily Star's headline, front page, take on this disaster today:Amanda Holden's sister has been caught up in this!!!
FFS, forget the death and suffering of thousands, we here need to be concerned that some minor celeb's relative, not even famous, is out there! Im sure everyone anxiously waiting for news of their loved ones is happy to know that Amanda has the same problem!
This how low some people come in the face of disaster!

The Government in Nepal are asking rescuers to go home.
It's also been heartening to see how many different countries have chipped in to the rescue operations.
And as usual Britain has dug deep.

KATHMANDU, Nepal — Nepal's government urged foreign rescue workers in the quake-hit capital to return home Monday as hundreds of people visited Buddhist shrines and monasteries to mark the birthday of Gautam Buddha.
Information Minister Minendra Rijal said the major rescue work in Kathmandu and surrounding areas has been completed and that the remaining operations can be handled by local workers. However, work remained in the villages and remote mountain areas, and foreign-aid volunteers could work with local police and army rescuers in those areas, he said.
