Like most crap American things, it'll be here too next time we have another Duggan type incident. People pretending they give a toss about the person and being legitimised by those who say that looting and rioting is there only way to display there anger. Sadly , I think there's already a large number of people almost wanting there to be an incident here that kicks it all off again.

Protest against institutionalised racism in your town by helping yourself to booze, consumer electronics and a new pair of trainers. These morons are a disgrace.
Hello. Black here. After watching the news, I saw this thread and didn't really want to read it because unfortunately it is all correctly summed up in the quoted post. I'm thoroughly embarrassed. There is a way to do things, this is not it.

On Twitter Banksy has been posting interesting comparisons of the Dr Martin Luther King PROTESTS and the current RIOTS.
Odd comparison did Dr King advocate widespread looting and arson?I don't recall him ever making such pronouncements?

More pertinently, why would you ste on your own doorstep? The irony is these are the very same folk that complain that their areas are steholes, wondering why mainstream business dont open in their areas (The UK that is, there are more underlying issues in the US).
I understand that in the States (someone please correct me if I am wrong) there is a worrying disconnect between black and white sections of the community.
It is something that is seemingly well documented. As such, surely if you were trying to get the backing of people en masse who don't recognise your plight to do so, criminal activity is probably not the wisest way forward. Its more a sure fire way to cement views and make folk ambivalent about matters to think 'No wonder.'
Don't think rioters have ever been very intelligent or high-minded wherever they are from - a herd mentality takes over.
The issue for the US is that this is a problem that can snowball. There seems to be a real problem with police training and behaviour towards black people in the USA, and no easy solutions given US antipathy to gun control (whioh might allow the police to relax a little) and federal interference. Could be a long, hot summer.

The locals in Brixton were protesting on Saturday about the area being to posh http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/traders-slam...

It is much easier to understand if you come from the other side or have a link to it. Some people living in these neighborhoods don't care about their proverbial doorstep, because there is nothing to care about. Working your way out of poverty in the United States is one of the most difficult things an average person could achieve in their lifetime. And the myth of the land of prosperity/opportunity is just that for the majority of individuals growing up in such an environment. Ghettos in DC, Philly, NYC, are nearly third world in some areas, most just never see or experience them.More pertinently, why would you ste on your own doorstep? That so many at these kinds of protests DON'T loot or riot is what should surprise you.
Many of the local people were on the streets last night trying to prevent the looting and destruction. Most of the people causing the trouble were not from that area.
There is no excuse for vandalism and theft but you'd better believe that people there, as in Ferguson and many, many other communities across this country have a very real and justified grievance.
