Heard her on SKY earlier saying that too many kids are in absolute poverty and something needs to be done.

Sending them to South Sudan for a week to understand what poverty is would be a good start.
she has a point. I know a lad on benefits who has four kids and they can only afford two holidays each year and a couple of weekend breaks all taken in this country. Now what sort of world is this when we deprive kids of holidays abroad.
Then I have seen queues of very thin people waiting for the food banks to open its a terrible world we live in.
This is the problem we have when we send clones to Westminster people who have never actually lived in the real world.

There isn't a decent politician of ANY party who can equal the greats of the past. They are all career politicians, without any ideas worth considering. In fact, they haven’t the first idea about anything really.

No long haul holidays, agreed that's truly outrageous in 2015. Every household should be paying extortionate flying taxes.

silly

There are plenty of people outside Westminster who regard relative luxury as absolute poverty. I'm not convinced they need to travel more, as it appears to be cynical political exploitation of the low-paid (UK standards) and those households living on benefits. They know its bks but need to maintain the pretence. This is happening with both politicians and supporters of certain Parties these days.

That's not to say the new Labour 'leader' couldn't do something ("something must be done") that their predecessors failed to do over 13 years of empty words. How exciting.

I am sure like many on here growing up was tough and compared to todays standard it was quite a poor
up-bringing but guess what we didnt think so and nobody told us we were poor.

I will believe it when I see it. The drum of austerity is getting a good bashing so I expect that our fickle voters will have some hard choices, salted crisps or cheese and onion, man with a beard or without. Not sure politics will play a part but "because austerity, what is it? dunno but sounds good and beardy bloke is shouting about it".

Yes, and in all probability it wont be very good, But at least we can take comfort in the fact that no matter how bad it is, it will always be a thousand times better than having a Labour government (or worse, a Labour /SNP coalition)

Don't like any of them, non of them actually has the best interests of UK people in mind.

Hopefully this poll will be about as accurate as the pre-election ones, with a large number of people too embarrassed to admit who they are going to vote.

I am not a fan of any party currently on offer, but there is a key difference between the tories and labour, The tories tend to operate policies which will get the country to survive as a whole. However labour tend to operate policies, that will get the UK to where Greece is now. Of the two, I know which I would prefer.

Despite this being on "Newsnight" i can't find any mention of this poll on this mornings BBC Breakfast show, nor on the BBC news website. Maybe slipped down the same memory hole as the revelations about the Labour MP in last Sundays newspapers.

Indeed he does.

Hannan said:
Fond as I am of the fellow, I am not one of the #ToriesForCorbyn who have sprung up across social media – and who, reportedly, include the Prime Minister. I can see the tactical attractions, obviously. A Corbyn-led Labour party would probably split. Even if it didn’t, it would sink to a 1983-style defeat. Against such a party, the Conservatives might be mediocre, pedestrian, self-serving and still stroll to victory.

Which is, of course, precisely the problem. Politics depends on credible opposition. Take away the fear of losing office and governing parties become flabby and often corrupt.
Following that with an analogy using what happened to Labour north of the border makes for good copy but it doesn't necessarily translate into a Tory mirror image.

Not long after the May result I'd commented that a disintegrating Labour Party wouldn't provide the Oopposition we need but a well-managed Labour Party of any shade of red could do that if it was...well managed. If it's also unpopular with Mondeo Man and Wolseley Woman then that's a bonus.

In this context it's interesting (!) to note the SNP's recent hostile take-over of the Opposition benches in the HoC.
