Heathrow Expansion
Discussion
I attended a talk Given by a chap from Associated British Ports.
He asked us to guess who Southampton's biggest competitor was?
The answer was Le Havre and Rotterdam. They are hub ports.
Heathrow is the only viable option for expansion. It is the only possible option for a hub port and the demand is already there.

Well this bloke who grows tea in Cornwall got his advert in on BBC news. It would be great for him & his `Smart Luxury Brand` http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b07z845r/bbc-... at 05.30.
I thought he came over as a complete tt.

I haven't been following the discussion so forgive me if I'm going over old ground, but are they really planning to site the new runway on top of the M25? Surely there's got to be a better solution than that!
Thankfully my days of commuting round the M25 are a dim and distant memory, but the stretch from the M40 to the M3 used to be horrendous at the best of times, what it would be like for the years it would take to build a tunnel (I assume) doesn't bear thinking about.

It is going to be totally built over - so yes travel fun. M3 to M40 is dire always. Thing is they need to ensure we have enough lanes before they build over

It wasn't 70 years ago.
The daft thing was not ring fencing the availability of a huge amount of the surrounding land for further expansion in the decades to come.
.
They did - why do you think these little villages have stayed relatively unspoilt? The daft thing was not ring fencing the availability of a huge amount of the surrounding land for further expansion in the decades to come.
.
For decades they were surrounded by green belt
Then one day someone decided London needed an orbital motorway - where to build it - that green belt looks ideal?
Another day - airport needs a new runway - green belt looks useful

Didn't know it existed. Well worth a feasability study I think.
Not sure if serious!Greenham doesn't have a runway anymore, it was dug up long ago. The whole area is now a nature reserve so chances of anyone thinking it feasible is less then zero. There are also no decent road links, no rail links, no nothing.

But that's OK in hindsight.
The third runway was thought about in he late 1950'sThe daft thing was not ring fencing the availability of a huge amount of the surrounding land for further expansion in the decades to come.

And this is what that scheme looked like.

Thank God that we are rid of that cowardly leftie. As soon as the going got tough, he got going.
Typical lying Remainer.
"I'll implement the will of the British people".
I seem to remember that the Remoaners accused the Leavers of jumping ship after the referendum when Nigel resigned.
So, remind me. Who is leader of UKIP?
What has Cameron done. He hasn't just (quite rightly) resigned as leader of the Conservative party. He has also thrown his toys right out of the pram, and resigned as an MP.
I have no idea why any of you Remainers would defend such an utter hypocrite.
Anorak's corner - and just for fun.
In the 1950s and 1960s there already was a third operational runway at Heathrow and- yes - I have landed in Viscounts and Tridents on it.
It was aligned roughly NE to SW, and was on the eastern side of what was then the only (central) terminals, and was used if the prevailing wind was in certain alignments.
Roughly speaking, from the north-eastern end, the final approach was over Wembley, and Southall. Much of it is still there, on the ground at Heathrow, but is now mainly used as a taxiway from T2.

Could it be upgraded and used today? In the 1950s and 1960s there already was a third operational runway at Heathrow and- yes - I have landed in Viscounts and Tridents on it.

From our house in North Reading we have a lot of planes fly over all the time - nothing like the noise of Windsor, but we will see notable increases in the volume. Maybe flight paths will change? I'm betting not so more for us but we want Heathrow 3rd runway
Flight paths will change. Guaranteed. AAGR said:

Ceased being used around 2000/2001-ish I think. It was certainly out of use by early 2003.
Was only used as older gen aircraft had a lot lower cross wind landing limitations. I grew up living right under the flightpath of R23 about 5nm out from the piano keys.
