Bernie Madoff had personal wealth of $126m (plus a further $800m+ of other interests) but he is 6 years into a 150 year sentence.
There is always an exception. However, don't forget who Bernie ripped off, the very rich.

Cancel the turf lorries for Russia and Qatar!
The biggest punishment for Russia would be to continue with the World Cup there in 2018. It is costing them billions and with the recent collapse in the rouble, oil price drop & massive endemic corruption, they really can't afford it any more as it is. The vast cost overruns due to corruption for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics would be impossible to bear in the current financial climate.

For 2018 they're upgrading several existing stadia, railway stations & airports. Plus they're building 6 new stadia along with training facilities, hotels etc. They've already been scaling back on all of this (including stadium capacity) and now they're even talking of using prison labour to help bring construction costs down.

I bet Blatter regrets the decision to backup to the cloud.

Putin is already putting the arm on Abramovich to pony up for some of the new stadiums.

So the Irish FA - gets a nice cash injection for not challenging Henry's blatant handball..

"Fifa paid FAI to stop legal action over Henry's World Cup handball"

France paid a bribe to host the World Cup in 1998

And on and on it goes...

Thanks for that. I agree of course.

Madoff's case was somewhat different. He pleaded. That makes a defence brief's job very difficult, although not impossible it has to be said. The witnesses against him were family members.

EDITED TO ADD:

(Always best to do your research after posting I find)

His two kids have died, the one who gave evidence against him hanged himself and the other died of a cancer relapse.

I thought one of his sons was imprisoned but I see my memory of the case was wrong. I was thinking of his brother, Peter.

AND DELETE:

The bit about his kids.

I was going to say the FBI have opened up a right can of worms here, but that would be underselling it.

It's more like a skip full.

I think the number of votes Australia as opposed to Qatar received sort of gave the game away.

Qatar 11
United States 3
South Korea 4
Japan 3
Australia 1

meanwhile looks like we've got 2022

Not the Irish FA (IFA) - which is the FA for Northern Ireland.

It's the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), which is the FA for the Republic of Ireland.

As for the money, was Father Ted Crilly the Treasurer of the FAI at the time by any chance?

"No, Your Honour, it wasn't a bribe. The money was simply resting in my account".

Offering a bribe is just as bad as accepting a bribe no, so presumably some FAI heads will be rolling now.

It's not really a bribe, it's a settlement.

The thing I find most strange is that the Irish thought they had a case and that FIFA were inclined to agree to some extent.

If I was connected with the Irish national squad in some way, I'd be really pissed to find out that my FA had accepted £5m to keep quiet!

What did they do with the £5 million?

Irish soccer is not the most lucrative of sports with many of the club stadiums run down and out of date.

Hmmm, a dubious distinction. Why has it only come out now? Why was there no mention of a settlement at the time? It's all murky.

€5m rather than £5m.

FIFA made a loan of €5m to the FAI for "the construction of a stadium in Ireland". As the Aviva Stadium was being built at the time it is assumed that the money went towards that.

The FAI were to have repaid the loan if the ROI team qualified for the 2014 World Cup Finals in Brazil. As they didn't FIFA wrote off the loan on 31 December 2014.
