My 7 month old is on solids and B/F and will likely be till 1 yr. Milk is, as you note, required till 1, and system delivery method is just a matter of preference smile
As a sidenote to the thread, what did you start them on solids wise?

We're thinking of baby rice mixed with some of Mummies milk, which seems to align with advice and then move onto other things like purees etc, but good to hear first hand experiences from someone at a similar stage.

6 months for solids. We're going with baby led weaning (http://www.babyledweaning.com/) mixed with pastes courtesy of Ella's kitchen and B/F. Messy but fun smile

No hard and fast rule, my two were around 3m, the general recent thinking has been 6m but they seem to be backtracking on it as some say that only milk for 6m isn't sufficient for growth.

Really go with your gut, each baby is different; my niece and nephew were on breast milk only, for six month, they both needed to be weaned far earlier as they were just constantly hungry.

I started my daughter on pureed veg just once a day from just under 5 and 1/2 months, she seemed interested. Carrot, butternut squash, swede etc, ellas kitchen do some good foods aswell. She has been predominantly b/f (occ formula for convenience) I didn't bother with baby rice this time except to mix it in a couple of recipes (Annabel Karmel ones). At six months I introduced baby porridge in the mornings. She is 6 and half months now so just starting to swap to more formula and expressed milk so I can become more routined! In next couple weeks I will start 3 meals a day and by time she is 8 months I am planning on just formula milk and meals. I'm going with the more mash it up way of feeding but I am giving her eg cooked Carrot in baton shape for her to chomp on aswell.

We have some of the Annabel books being delivered this week as it's getting to the point where we think he is just about ready for some solids so we'll give them a good read and take it from there.

All the advice and guidance we've read says 6m+ to start weaning and that a hungry baby doesn't equal a baby that needs to go on solids.

Wouldn't go over 6 months to start the weaning time, iron.levels start to deplete at that point hence why food needs introducing, even if very small amount. They do also any if leave longer they can become more fussy with texture of food etc.

I started a bit earlier not because I thought she was hungry but just to introduce flavours mainly.

Have to say re the thread title I have no idea why Mums would want to B/f for anywhere near that long!!

He's gonna get a taste of solids this weekend as we think he's ready for it, he'll be 5 1/2 months.

When we're eating our breakfast or lunch near him he just stares, licks his lips and goes nomnommmmmmmm so I think he thinks he's ready for it too!

Introducing flavours as early as possible is one of the thinkings behind changing the 6m weaning guidelines; it is to stop babies becoming picky, particularly with green veg which because of it's particular bitter taste, if introduced too late, a baby won't have had time to build up a taste for it before flavour detecting has time to start developing fully.
