What a tragic loss.

RIP Charles.

One of the very few LibDems that I respected.

I think that all who saw him on QT earlier this year recognised that alcoholism was sadly tightening its grip upon him - a principled and very human man; we should have more like him in public life

I met Charles Kennedy at a wedding several years ago, a hugely engaging man who was clearly very capable; sadly afflicted by addiction that prevented him realising his full potential. Very sad for those close to him.
Was his drink problem really that serious? As in full blown alcoholism, drinking all day every day?

Very tragic, and as others have said, he came across as an urbane personable sort , far removed from the carreer politician norm.

RIP

Very sad. He seemed like an honest and decent chap who actually believed in doing what he thought was right.

Met him twice. Both times involved a disagreement about politics but he was a very decent, polite and thoughtful bloke.

Shame we don’t have more politicians like him across all parties.

Allegedly a bottle of whiskey a day, and smoked 40-60 a day - certainly not a recipe for a long and healthy life.

He had a very intense mind that manifested itself in both positive and negative ways including heavy smoking/ drinking. Too often we see people who are hugely capable hindered by flaws and he was no different. If we could support them and avoid the afflictions to expand then we would all benefit. The replies to this thread are all positive which shows how well he was perceived.

......such a shame for his friends and family.

One of the few semi-decent politicians that said what he thought rather than the party line as well.

Always struck me as a genuine person unlike so many career politicians. I may not have agreed with his views but will always uphold his right to express them, as he did so eloquently, effectively and without slagging off those who didn't agree with him.

He clearly had his problems which received too much joke coverage and not enough support to help him address them.

A sad loss for British and Scottish politics.

Each alcoholic presents in a slightly different way. Untreated, the outcome is always the same. Tragically, the vast majority of alcoholics suffer the very same fate as Kennedy.

I've spoken to many alcoholics over the years who I've seen wheeled in to hospital on an ambulance trolley and who just a few days later, after intensive medical care, look me straight in the eye and announce that they know where they went wrong and this time, this time they won't get caught out. Rejecting any offers of help, they tap dance their way back out of the front door of the hospital, up the road and in through the door of the nearest pub.

I attend too many funerals.

A terrible shame for his family.

Unfortunately I lived with alcoholism. My ex would drink all day, every day. It made her the personification of Jeckyll and Hyde,it twisted her mind, made her erratic, unpredictable, and at times very dangerous. She is still alive, but she has been wheeled in several times. Apparently she now goes through periods of sobriety, then completly smashed for sometimes weeks.

As you observe, it will be a funeral, most likely sooner than later.

Entirely agree. I have seen those flaws in otherwise gifted individuals. Sadly often very destructive.

A great politician, and a terrible loss. I was gutted to see him lose his seat to the Nats. Along with Robin Cook, he was one of the few leading politicians of the time to stand up against Blair's Iraq adventure.

Kennedy always came across as a decent and honest man. I must admit I found his Question Time appearence a few months ago quite funny however alcoholism isn't funny at all is it and it destroys families and lives.

Would that still be classed as a non suspicious death because they are fairly clear is isn't suspicious.
