Virtually on the day that the Government announced emergency legislation to ban "Legal Highs" it is very poignant to remind us all that alcohol has remained the number one destroyer of lives and families. I have personally seen 2 friends of mine commit suicide due to alcoholism. 1 took his life after staying sober for over 10 years and then relapsing. No political party is going to properly tackle the long term effects of alcoholism in this country.

In fact north of the border being an alcoholic / ex alcoholic is considered a “badge of honour”. Given that they have less than 10% of the population of England and Wales the impact of this must be much greater than here but I never saw any mention of this in Scotland during last years referendum or last months elections.

What made you make such a bet? Seems quite a random thing to have done so just curious.

Very sad to hear this news: I grew up in his constituency and he always came across as a really nice guy, very interested in his constituents and in representing them as best he could. I was gutted when he lost his seat, and today's news is a real shame, he'll be missed by a lot of people up there I think.

RIP.

Maybe he saw Charles Kennedy on some election coverage? He looked pretty rough. Sometimes things like that just jump out at you when you see people on the TV. My dad said something similar recently. We were watching the round-up at the end of the premier league matches 2 weeks ago, and the post-match interviews came on. Steve Bruce was interviewed about Hull getting relegated and everything about him had that same sort of "vibe". My dad said straight away "Christ he looks a state. And he's on the bottle as well, you can tell just looking at him".

Now I know that's a big generalisation, and doesn't altogether make sense if you think about it, but it was his instant reaction, and I couldn't disagree, he just had that look about him, that I can't quite put my finger on. I hope he's wrong because I think Steve Bruce is a nice guy and not a bad manager really either.

As ever, its not long before grubby scum seep out the woodwork.

Slimy Salmond , the Scottish Nazi Party personified.

ETA I cannot recall the demise of a politician seeing such genuine lament as the loss of CK. So many tributes to him as a person, as against his beleifs.

If only Salmond had shown some class and said something along the lines of "Charles Kennedy was by far the most generous person I have ever met in politics. Sad loss of a great politician and, above all, a great man."

Really let himself down with his tirade

Until recently he was my local MP and although I have never been a lib dem voter, I did vote for him as the only person likely to beat the SNP. He always came across as a decent bloke who actually cared about his constituents and wanted to do the best for all of them. He will be missed, RIP.

Sad to hear the news, he popped in to my office just before Christmasa good few years ago to see how we were getting on with the Christmas rush (Royal Mail delivery office) and a few of us were of to the local for a few pints,he joined us and was great company, a genuinely nice, witty man with great stories.
He loved representing the area and everyone up here speaks fondly of him.
Rest In Peace

I just noticed this from the BBC on twitter

BBC Wales Politics ‏@WalesPolitics 2h2 hours ago
Labour AM Jenny Rathbone has deleted a tweet saying the death of Charles Kennedy was a "sad end to the demise of the Lib Dems".

Its because all too many of them cannot see outside "being a politician" and be able to see "being a human being".

This is partly why Lefties went to Thatchers funeral and booed. Utter s

I just don't get why a politician would feel animosity towards another politician on such a level that you would quite literally slag of the dead.

If you lose to an opponent in politics there are only two reasons.

1. you failed to make the argument
2. you were wrong.

making political opponents out to be the devil in disguise or just being downright disrespectful will not help your political ambition.

And as to why the left hold so much hatred, it is a mystery to me.

Speaking of the Socialist left,(labour) as against Liberal left (LD's) you only have to poison the mind for a while and read up on Marx and Engels.

The whole core of the Socialist left comes from Envy, Jealously and sheer spite. Anyone who has done ok, even reasonably is a target of oppression.Power by any means, the Bolsheviks showed how.

Thats how they are, too twisted to see it.

My suspicion was that without his job he'd drink himself to death.

Sad at such a young age, and a nice enough chap.

If it were Blair I'm not sure it would get such a similar reaction.

I think you could substitute the name of almost any politician that gained power there.

In the UK, the act of winning an election makes people hate you.

Kennedy was a jolly loser, so we celebrate his passing.

On the contrary. This precise tactic has worked spectacularly up until now for the SNP. They coined the phrase 'Red Tories' to turn left-wing voters against left-wing parties. They demonised everyone who did not support their one cause of independence to the extent that good people such as Charles Kennedy were voted out in favour of no-marks wearing a yellow and black rosette.

I do hope that Salmond's latest mistake will be the turning point, although somehow I doubt it as another of the SNP's tactics has been to convince their supporters that being wrong is right if the cause is good.

Charles Kennedy, RIP cry

I don't know about this. As a Lib Dem member myself, I think they have both been excellent leaders. The decimation of the Lib Dems at the election is not the fault of Clegg and I don't think there are many Lib Dems who wouldn't have gone into a coalition with the Tories. Charles Kennedy was great for the party, Clegg was great for the country - which I think we are now seeing evidence of now the Tories are allowed to govern alone.
Both were worthy and excellent party leaders, however.
Was not CK the only Lib Dem MP to vote against the coalition with the Tories? I'm sure I've read that somewhere. Have to say I think he was misguided in that respect, the coalition gave us stable Gov't when it was most needed.
Yes, but the Lib Dems are now wiped out, the coalition probably led to Kennedy's downfall.
