To be honest I can only barely register this person on my cultural radar. But I do find the arguments swirling around that their appearance on the cover of Vanity Fair is symptomatic of America's decline into decadence - along the lines of ancient Rome - quite interesting, whilst not necessarily agreeing with them. Thoughts?

If he were the President then maybe, but he's just an idiot.

perhaps the ultimate idiot - yet being lauded as a cultural icon by a culture that has lost touch with what made it powerful

Ex-olympic decathlon gold medal winner.

Equivalent to Daley Thompson, imagine if Daley changed gender. I know, who cares.

Why is he an idiot? Or an icon? Or an omen of change?

It's a guy in a dress, where's the news in that?

Was it Alastair Cooke who said "America is the nation that went from Barbarism to Decadence without being civilised in between"?
That is an excellent point. Yet they marketed the decadence successfully for perhaps, what, half a century?

I was in Bruges recently. And the entire area within the inner canals is effectively a theme park. Everything in it is entirely constructed for tourism - no different to EuroDisney a few hundred miles away. And yet Bruges was once the New York of Europe. It was real and genuine a mere 300 years ago.

I know people like the Jenner / Kardshians are desperate for fame, and desperate to stay famous, but having a sex change does seem a somewhat extreme method of achieving this.

I know they could've been supressing their true self for all this time, but as Bruce he seemed pretty convincing as the alpha male of the family, just seems such a violent u-turn.

You know it helps to give some context as to who the buggery you are talking about right? Without your readers having too google them.
More to the point - what arguments? By whom? Which cover of Vanity Fair.

In order for something to be a cultural reference then context and relevance has to be given. Most ppl have never heard of this person. Most had no idea they were on any cover of Vanity Fair nor what on earth is being discussed in this "argument". Perhaps you could enlighten us.

Somehow me thinks this does not equate to Gibbon.

I think the words that are missing in the above posts are 'she' and 'her'. I can't stand anything that the Kardashians are about, and I didn't think particularly much of Bruce Jenner for being involved with them. I've got a huge amount of respect for Caitlyn Jenner now though - I don't think she will have transitioned (if that's the right terminology) to being a women for sts and giggles.

I don't think it's for the OP to give a generous back story, to be honest. If the reader knows what the OP is talking about, then they can respond. Otherwise, they can choose to ignore or read up until they're in a position to respond.

I don't, on the odd occasion I wander over to the science sub-forum, ask for an explanation of whatever it is they talk about. The forum is verbose enough as it is - further prolixity can only be discouraged!

On topic - I find it all quite odd. She's certainly making the most of the whole thing, though. I'd feel sorry for the kids but I can't, really.

The weird thing as far as I understand from snippets I've come across (no pun intended) is that he wants to transition to a women but remains sexually interested in women, so he's effectively transitioning to be a lesbian - is this normal?

This whole Kardashian thing is just a human zoo, isn't it?

Unfortunately, it is quite an important moment.
For whatever reason Caitlyn Jenner has found herself on a pedestal with an amount of associated furore. If it's by design, i've no idea why she'd want to do this myself, but if it prevents another Leelah Alcorn or Vanessa Santillan it's all worth it.

Anyways Caitlyn does appear to have a GT3 RS so she can't be that bad

I had to google him (no idea who he was really) and had a look at his Wikipedia page. Someone had changed the entire “he” to “she”, seems a little strange to me when referring to Decathlon Olympic Gold medal.

Apparently yes. I knew a trans-gendered person about 20 years back and she explained to me that sex and sexuality were different and the majority of post-op male to female transsexuals were still attracted to women and ended up with lesbians.

She on the other hand was gay and attracted to men but felt she was female, and therefore after the operation was 'right' in her mind.

Pretty head-fking stuff. confused
