Shami Chakrabarti was on the Andrew Marr show this morning claiming to be blonde and Swedish. That was the first time I've ever seen her make an attempt, no matter how feeble, at humour. She still couldn't grasp what was wrong though with a white person claiming to be black for political gain. Infringed on their personal human rights I guess.

There is a small, but growing, 'trans-racial' movement in the United States. Their argument seems to be 'I may be white on the outside but deep down I am black/latino/chinese etc, who are you to say otherwise'. It won't be long until equality laws cover such people.
I hope it explodes, then race will be no more, just perceived race. Perfect!
Even back in the days of slavery there were plenty of slaves who were legally black despite having 6 or 7 white great grandparents. If they gained their freedom they often made a specific decision whether identify themselves as white or black.
There was also the case of two brothers who became free around the start of the civil war. One joined an all black regiment of the union army and was taken prisoner by the confederates. The other, who had decided to be white, then joined the confederate army in the hope of rescuing him.

The whole race thing has been obviously absurd all along.

Why do people conveniently forget the white slave trade?

I'm struggling to see why it's a problem. The only problem I see is calling it the "National Association for the Advancement of Colored People". That's racist right there. biggrin

I am sure she identified very closely with the woman - both using acting ability to gain fame and income in the 'rights' industry.

It would be brilliant - every time I apply for a job I'd claim I was an ethnic minority so you have to give me an interview!

Most of us don't give two figs what race she is.

Tellingly, the civil rights community do.

Anybody got a pic of her bum? Then we'll know how black she really is.
I'm glad I'm not the only person that thought like this the boat race passes thumbup

That being said along with not looking "black" she also doesn't look 37. I'd want to see her birth certificate too.

This was brought up when new 'guidelines', i.e. rules, were imposed on recruitment in my police force. Ethnicity was a positive, for the figures. What if, a woman asked, a person who said they were, for instance, Afro Caribbean on the form attended and they were apparently white. The woman, someone senior in recruiting and both intelligent and quick witted, was told categorically that this would never happen. This generated laughter evidently, and the bloke doing the talking thought it was aimed at the woman.

As she said - later - if they get someone apparently white saying they were black they'd have to run with it. They could not, of course, reject the person for telling lies on their application for quite obvious reasons. The legal dept would be aghast.

There was a recent test on male DNA which showed that a clan in Scotland, which not so much claimed but trumpeted descent from Irish kings, was, in fact, more Norse than Scot, and had little Irish. Some bloke interviewed suggested he was devastated and indicated that his life was somehow destroyed. It was as if the truth had someone changed him in his eyes. It's not as if he had to stop eating potatoes and start hitting people with an axe.

It does throw up an interesting question though - at what point do you stop being considered black or mixed race.

Many 50:50 black/white mixed race people consider themselves black. I bet a fair few people who have 25:75 do too.

My cousin is mixed race. Her grandfather is black, whilst her grandmother is white. Her mother is therefore 50:50 mixed race. Her father is white and so my cousins is 25:75 mixed race - however to look at - you would swear she was white European.

If somebody puts that they are mixed race on an application form - would they be required to prove it if it wasn't outwardly obvious?
