Sir Nicholas Winton, who organized trains from Prague that saved 669 children from the Nazis by bringing them to the UK on the eve of WW2, and then persuaded the government to accept them, has died.
And he never told anyone for half a century, till featured on That's Life after his wife found his notebook

An absolutely amazing person!!!!
What an incredible role model - what do we have today - "12 year" old "celebrities" releasing their autobiographies and loads of other muppets in football etc that would not know the meaning of humanity if it hit em in the face (sorry too good to pass on ;-))!
Sadly they sure don't make them like that anymore.

Appeared on this earth and left it better than it was when he came. Can't ask more than that.

I was reading a BBC article about him at lunch and was welling up reading some of the quotes from what parents had said or written to their children when the kids escaped. One spoke/wrote of their sadness of being parted from the most precious thing in their life, being thankful for the time they'd been together, wishing they could have had longer. This all in the knowledge that they may never meet again. Many didn't ever regain contact, for the parents had perished, proof that what he was doing was vital.
What a man.

Winton was a genuine hero, a truly great man, one of the greatest of the 20th Century. A very sad loss but a life well lived. RIP Sir Nicholas

A very genuine & unassuming man. My mother knew him very well & was at the memorial service. He never enjoyed the fuss that surrounded what he'd done & you always go the impression he wished it had stayed hidden. As others have said a real hero of the highest order.
