Interesting little piece in The Times yesterday relating to a Sunday Times investigation into Mr Palmers career called Operation Tiberius. No way to link so quick précis.
1.) Palmer was protected by a cadre of corrupt police officers in both the Met and Essex.
2.) In searching for his assets the investigation has uncovered "endemic police corruption linked to major organised crime"
3.) Palmers organisation was able to infiltrate the police "at will in north east and east London"
4.) Two of Palmers associates were once arrested with a pair silenced Uzis and 400 rounds of ammunition.
5.) He was not killed with a 12 bore shotgun as previously reported but by a small-calibre weapon, the type of which the article doesn't mention.
6.) "Palmer was found to be a close associate of Kenneth Noye...
I think the answer to post of those points would be "No st Sherlock!".
Interesting about the small calibre weapon though, this second change of heart by the authorities doesn't seem to have been very widely reported.

The lack of exit wound suggests it was more than likely a .22, which is a professional killer's weapon. The fact that the killer disguised the entry wound by shooting him in the surgical wound also suggests a degree of proficiency in the use of a gun.The Hypno-Toad said:

Operation Tiberius is a Scotland Yard investigation into corruption within the Met, not by the Sunday Times.1.) Palmer was protected by a cadre of corrupt police officers in both the Met and Essex.

A secret Scotland Yard report seen by The Sunday Times concludes that Palmer was protected for years by half a dozen bent cops, including two who also worked for David Hunt, another organised crime boss. When Hunt sued The Sunday Times in a landmark libel case in 2013, a judge ruled that he led a gang involved in “fraud, money-laundering and extreme violence,” but he has never been convicted of a serious crime.
The Metropolitan Police intelligence report, codenamed Operation Tiberius, described Palmer as “a top echelon figure in UK organised crime” and said he had amassed “a small fortune through a criminal career which encompasses armed robbery, drug trafficking and multi-million pound property fraud.”

The Tiberius enquiry began in 2000 as a long-term search for Palmer’s assets. It quickly found what the report described as “endemic police corruption linked to major organised crime”. It said Palmer and Hunt both ran organisations that were “able to infiltrate the (Met) at will in Northeast and East London”. It added: “Existing murder investigations have been compromised and sensitive intelligence has leaked from other organised crime investigations.”
The report reveals that the Met attempted to infiltrate Palmer’s circle with two undercover police officers who targeted an Essex bar believed to have “an almost exclusively criminal clientele”. But such was the tight-knit discipline of Palmer’s associates that the officers were “always regarded with a degree of suspicion by the target group, and were never fully accepted by the staff or customers at the bar

Suppressed .22 rifles are very common in the UK as they are perfect for vermin control

Police sources have since said the murder bore all the hallmarks of a professional hit
Well, I suppose that means that there was at least *some* professional involvement in the whole affair.Everyone else involved seems to have been some form of amateur clown or outright chimp.

But despite suffering six wounds, only five bullets have been recovered, according to The Times, as police continue to search the garden of his home in South Weald, near Brentwood, Essex.
My money is on the missing bullet still being in the back garden, painstakingly mounted on a six-foot high illuminated crystal display plinth, underneath a large flashing neon sign saying "Oi, Rozzers! - missing bullet here", and possibly fitted with a 120db/m bright red klaxon which sounds every 30 seconds. The plot gets thicker

A top-secret surveillance operation monitored gunned-down timeshare fraudster John “Goldfinger” Palmer for at least eight years up until his death two weeks ago, it can be revealed.
The British operation, which drew upon listening devices placed by Spanish law enforcement, amassed a treasure trove of intelligence on organised crime figures from at least 2007. Fears about the operation being compromised by corrupt police officers resulted in it being established at a remote RAF base in the north of England.

This investigation really is a bad joke. They'll be telling us that the shooter stole his toilet seat next.
