Dukes of Hazard pulled from US TV screens
Discussion
A few years ago, a friend was on holiday in Florida and was drinking in a hotel beach bar type place, and happened to be wearing a confederate flag T shirt he had bought.
There were mostly Americans also drinking and chatting in the bar, also on holiday, and one of them asked him why he was wearing the T shirt. He said it was just a bit of fun seen as how he was in the south, and to him it meant the hillbilly lifestyle: monster trucks, beer, watching the Dukes of Hazzard as a kid etc.
The Americans then proceeded to lecture him about how it meant Salvery, Civil war and numerous other offensive things. They weren't angry or anything, just clearly irked at his perceived ignorance of wearing such a 'symbol' and felt the need to mention it.
He didn't wear it again.
I guess this backlash has been brewing for quite some time.

About 150 years I guess this backlash has been brewing for quite some time.
Seriously though my greatest surprise is how long it has lasted. I felt a little 'uncomfortable' about it many years ago when I first realised what it stood for, but just put it in the same box that I do the name of the dog in Dambusters - it was of the times, it is no longer of the times and so past contextual use is no issue but present application should not be tolerated.

It's been a good 30 years since I've seen any DoH but I watched this with my parents and I doubt my mum would have allowed me to if the show had racist overtones.
Is my memory wrong?
No idea, all I can remember about the show is Daisy Duke in a pair of skin tight denim shorts. Is my memory wrong?

Something happens in real life, so ban something on TV.
There we go, the balance has been adjusted.
It's like banning the George cross, because some drunk hooligans who have them on their sleeveless t-shirts have some bad opinions.
Nobody has banned anything. A cable company has decided to pull an old show that nobody watches anyway from it's schedule at this sensitive time. That's all. There we go, the balance has been adjusted.

Autotrader have been running ads for quite some time now featuring the good old boys and a 69 Charger with no stars and bars...

*Hazzard.
Asterisk doesn't work on PH when used as the first character in the line on a post. It does now I've quoted you.Similarly, autocorrect sometimes works in ways you don't wish it to.
Funny isn't it, the internet.

Ebay have this week announced they won't sell items with the confederate flag on. The General Lee car model was still available though.
It's getting silly now. Same as if you sell the old board game "Escape from Colditz" you have to cover up the Swastika.Einion Yrth said:
