Phew. Glad I used Tor.
How would using TOR protect you from leaked online account details?

The "expose" doesn't quite work. Release credit card details? Names on the card?

To whom? Where? The hackers' website? Release to the BBC/ITV/CNN who are going to do what? Print all 37m names & details? Release on some random page somewhere that within 24hrs will be forgotten/not heard of by anybody who has a normal life, job, jobs, 100 more important daily details things to remember.

And then what? Its very easy to claim your credit card has been hacked, esp in this day and age. And what does it charge? £20/30/40 ? I put damn nr a grand a week on my credit card due to the travelling etc, a random £20 or £30 somewhere would never get noticed, so easy to claim it was hacked and you didn't know.

Mass expose blackmail never works very well. Once you threaten you lose your power because you are subject to the dictum of "publish and be damned" and once the bluff is called the blackmailer/publisher loses all their impact.

Far far far more likely is that this was a targeted hack bought and paid for by a rival website/service that wanted to bugger a competitor before they floated and effectively sealed their market share. The individual details themselves are irrelevant.
Can't be that hard to e-mail everyone on the list and demand some money or you'll publish all their details on the web. Even if a small % of the 37m take up the offer you are quids in

A what? A torrent file? Seriously? Seriously??

Right then. And post where? Searched by whom? When? Why?

Newsflash - because you missed the rather big hint I put in the initial post - most ppl have either never heard of a torrent file or bit torrent or FTP or any of that other "geek" crap. That goes double if you are busy mum or dad doing their normal life. Even if they had heard of it, the lifespan of this is less than 24hrs, actually its more like 12hrs, because sleep and work takes care of half that time. Why only such a short period? Because tomorrow brings more and different immediate crisis such that that random torrent file on that random place on the internet falls out of your "to do" list.

Yes, there are LOTS of ways to do something. To make it viable so that LOTS of ppl see said information and can find the individual information relevant to them in the short timespan available to them to able to give it any attention however, is much more difficult in the real world. Todays news is tomorrow's fish wrapper.

Shouldn't be too difficult to present the billing addresses overlaid on Google maps or similar, with a hyperlink to registered name, age, obligatory cock photo and a transcript of their chat/email history... creating a public searchable directory with the option to have your name removed for $50

Who wouldn't have a quick nosey scour of their neighbourhood if such a URL were made public? hehe

Didn't somebody do something similar (but very crude) after stealing AOL search history with logged username/IP, years ago?

I for one would have zero interest in looking at the details of people on the site and t can't imagine anyone I know would want to either.

It's a chip wrapper.

Soon to be yesterdays news and worthless information.

Searched by various people who're bored, curious or have a malicious intent. We all know the data exists, and the newspapers will all run news stories again if/when it leaks.

Thats fine, people who're too stupid to do it, or don't care about it in the first place, are irrelevant.

Try telling that to people who end up divorced, never see their kids again and have the CSA chasing them for 20% of their wages because of this laugh

I think if people have used the site and their partner has no idea then publishing the names etc are unlikely to have much impact. But, if someone already suspects their partner then when the details are released it wont be hard to find if they are on the list with a quick Google search.

If there are people of power or well known people on their then they will be stting themselves. Not only will they probably be blackmailed but if their details are leaked they will quickly become front page news and they will have no where to hide.

One thing about this whole story is the people behind are say they are doing it for moral reasons, because it says it ruins lives. What utter bks. It provides a means for people already dicing with their marriage to meet like minded people. It takes two to tango and its those two people who have made their choice. It is not up to some keyboard warrior on some moral crusade to out them. I'm not condoning what they have done but I don't see how the site is responsible and I don't see how breaking the law, hacking someone's website and trying to ruin their business.

We should probably close all bars, clubs, gyms, public spaces etc in case married people meet each other and start and affair.

Don't forget offices! I've had my last 2 affairs via meeting people at work, and currently working on the next one ; -)

No honestly - I genuinely never heard of it. Why should I anyway? It's not something I'd ever dream of even going near.

Same here. It sounds like a Kim Kardashian-alike something or other. Now I know what it is, and looking around, the world hasn't changed.

lol, post on a torrent site (you know the pirate bay and similar, their is stuff like this on them all the time) by the hackers then 'the groups' will go through it find any celebs/high profile connected people and you know go to the papers, in the short term then in the long term get a website up that can be easily searched to see if your spouse/friend was/is using it. All pretty simple stuff really, non-geeks may not know what a torrent is, be we geeks are vast and organised and we have marketing geeks in our number. :P

Why would hackers want to close down a cheating club web site, are the hackers hurting from being cheated on? Why would they give a toss, moral grounds?

Jeeze, hack ISIS accounds or other.
