Really hope this young lad is found safe and well. Have to ask though; walking two miles to a park at the age of just 7?

Gutted to hear they have found a body. Was really hoping he had just got lost or something. Really feel for the family.
I'm from the exact same area of Barnsley so know the area well. Worsborough to Locke Park is a long walk for anyone, especially a 7yr old on his own. The construction site is next to some fairly big drops/cliffs so maybe that was a factor.

Echo these thoughts. 2 miles is a long long way and it's not like Barnsley is a sleepy backwater. It would be getting on for 9pm by the time the lad got home.
Was just sitting here wondering if I am unusual in thinking that is a long way for a 7yr old... Very sad news though.

My son is nearly 7 and I don't let him out of sight, let alone a solo 2 mile walk crossing numerous busy roads.
Different times I guess - but back in the early 80s, I regularly walked home alone from primary school at that age (a distance of 1 mile part of which was through a park - crossing several reasonably busy roads).Probably wont have been allowed to do that at 9pm though.

Our niece is 7.
I can't imagine her being out on her own 2 miles from home, let alone walking there and back on her own.
I don't want to start throwing accusations around as it's pretty grim whatever the outcome, but something smells a bit fishy to me. Wouldn't dream of letting a 7yr old wander about on his own these days unfortunately. I can't imagine her being out on her own 2 miles from home, let alone walking there and back on her own.

IIRC statistically, you are far safer now than back in the day. It's just the, must sell more copy, sensationalist, reporting that makes it feel less safe.I used to walk or cycle 2 miles along a busy main road to get to school or go and visit any of my friends. Then we would go out ranging over miles of countryside, or play in the spinney, or at the newting pond. Guess what, none of us died.
