Really? Is she not protesting too much that it wasn't anything to do with religion?

Sticks and stones, et al.

"I am Muslim, but I am tolerant. One of the girls called out to that with a body like mine she wasn't surprised that I wouldn't be seen in a bikini. She also called me fat. I went towards her to give her a slap and then she fought with my friend..."

That's a great example of tolerance right there. Her own words no less.
Sounds a tad like a reverse ' I'm not racist, but...' type line ?

Why, I think the point has be proven.
If you're so bleeding tolerant of everything why insult a random girl? (who then insults back etc, etc)
I would have thought that this thread alone – in which the first seven responses were convinced it was an Islam issue – explains why she needed to clarify her position.

She's a gobste, but not a religiously motivated one.

Right - so if she doesn't say 'it's not about religion', everyone will assume it's about religion, and if she does say 'it's not about religion', some will still assume it's about religion. Were you a Witchfinder in a previous life?

Let me switch it around for you.

On many of these anti-Islam threads (and there are plenty to choose from) some posters are keen to point out that they are tolerant of other races and cultures and that they only have concerns about the religion. Is it ok to 'jump to conclusions' about those posters, despite what they say?

Oh, and suggesting that someone works for one of the premier human rights groups by way of putting them down could only work as an insult on here.

So you mustn't protest too vigorously if you're innocent otherwise you are obviously guilty?

Do they still duck witches in your village?

I wasn't attempting to insult you, I was laughing at you.

For some reason you've decided to take her word at face value, but is it not entirely plausible that the entire incident did stem from the fact that the muslim girls didn't agree with the non-muslim's sense of dress, or lack thereof?

Clipped for effect, "I'm tolerant but insult me again and I'll smash your face in." It just doesn't add up, and if it doesn't add up in all likelihood it's probably not true.

But that's fine, if you can't see through it then don't worry about it. It may be nothing to do with religion at all but these days I'm a little cynical and when I see someone essentially leap to defend what sounds like a blatant bit of BS it would be remiss of me not to point it out.

Ducking witches indeed. Hahaha.

Well to be fair they guessed the religion and surprise, surprise they wern't wrong. They might have got the motivation wrong, if you beleive her sob story. I beleive France has hate crime legislation that significantly increases the penalities for racially or religiously motivated crimes, so she would say that wouldn't she?

A fight between two groups of Christian/atheist girls wouldn't even make the local rag, let alone the international press, so of course there had to be an angle. And what's the biggest hook out there right now? Islam. So you'll excuse me if I don't consider those posters who guessed the religion to be up there with Sherlock Holmes in the sleuthing stakes.

She didn't say anything about tolerance to the other girls, she said that later by way of explanation. Because she probably felt she had to (see this thread and the fact that it made the international press for reasons why).

Unfortunately we'll just have to agree to disagree.

To me, it sounds like an excuse or BS that she's had time to think about after the event.

Still, at least it was the religion card and not the race card!

Just so we're clear, I said you may have been a Witchfinder; someone else used the ducking witches line.

Yep - and when you're wondering one day how we arrived at a situation where Mo from the local takeaway has been properly 'taken away' to a camp somewhere without recourse to a fair trial, you might understand why I do.

Just to be clear, "tolerant" here is used in a religious context as in "tolerant of other faiths". She clearly has a low tolerance threshold of girls who are skinnier than her.

It is not very surprising that this story gained traction given "Charlie Hebdo" and National Front politicians keen to push an agenda of French values being under threat, but, now we have heard part of the story from one of the protagonists, and the official statement of the police, both denying that there is a religious element to this fracas, it is a bit disappointing that so many people seem determined to carry on venting their prejudices when the facts as reported don't support them. It is, however, very PH.

Semantics, doesn't bother me either way.

There are times that I can see straight through a lie. I'm not always right but usually the odds are in my favour, and there is something decidedly fishy about the defendants statement.

As someone else said earlier, it was very much in the same vein as "I'm not racist but...".

Really I think we just deserve some more gratuitous bikini shots!

The only thing worse than an argument that's not about a bikini or religion is an argument about an argument that's not about a bikini or religion.

At least an argument about a bikini or religion has some solid metaphysical or fashion based rationale behind it, an argument about an argument that's not about a bikini or religion is really an argument about nothing... And I haven't come here for that!
