I think you're right. It seems its ok to kill animals so long as they don't have names. I don't like what he did one little bit but I don't like this social media witch hunt very much either.

Let me get this straight. The guy goes out with a compound bow, sticks an arrow in to one of these animals, and then the guides finish it off with a large-calibre bullet to the head/heart? The arrow will be like a pinprick to some of the animals he's hunted, so he may as well use a paintball gun to "mark" the ones he wants to guides to get for him, so he has his trophies. It's hardly "man against beast".

I shoot, I understand conservation and animal control, but that just seems like a very wrong way of doing it.

Love the troll twitter account by the way, that it's got half of the contributors to this thread believing it's real means they're pretty subtle.

The chicken on my plate is bred to be eaten.
The Lion, on the other hand, WASN'Tbred to be hunted for fun, have its head stuck on a wall as a trophy and its skin turned into a rug to be put in front of the fire.
But he thought he was hunting a Lion that was bred for this purpose, he just got the wrong one. I'm not defending Lion hunting but let's get a bit of perspective here.

I suppose suicide is an option.

With a poorly aimed crossbow, of course.

There's plenty of animals "bred for hunting" but I'm not sure Lions are on of them. I believe it was lured out of a protected park by the locals for the American to hunt. I'm sure this goes on a lot and I'd imagine no one who's unhappy at this event is happy at the "sport" as a whole

It might be that he just happened to kill the "wrong lion" but if that brings a spotlight on the whole practice then maybe that's a good thing?

My thoughts exactly. Prehaps Cecil's death can become a positive thing.

Yeah I'm not sure that the whole "the animals been bred for a specific purpose, eating, hunting etc" is a solid ethical argument, if that's the case we are morally free to do what we like to anything that exists due to our actions.

But by the same token, it is better (if that's the right word) that the animals hunted were bred for it.

More generally, for these animals to still be around in 50 years time they need to worth more alive to the local population than dead. I must admit in the past I thought that canned hunting maybe a necessary evil to maintain the species and their genetic diversity up until a point where cultural inclinations towards hunting decline. The more I read however seems to support the idea that captive lion breeding for hunting is actually contributing to the decline of wild populations.

With all that said, there does need to be an honest discussion of how best to protect species and habitats they in which they live - because at the moment whatever is being done clearly isn't working.

Did he? He's got form for lying to US authorities about the location of a bear he shot in 2006 (in or outside protected area) so he may not be as scrupulous as he pretends.

That said, the reaction to this has been rather extreme.

I agree, if it wasn't a 'famous' lion, this wouldn't even be in the news. Whether you agree or disagree with what he did, the reaction is way OTT.

I can only speak for myself but I'd be no less upset if it wasn't a famous Lion.

For me, it's nothing to do with names and everything to do with the murderous act of killing an animal for fun.

A fox, pheasant or Lion, it matters not. In my view, you have to be pretty fked in the head to get any enjoyment from killing an animal for entertainment.

Hence, I'm glad that a ststorm has ensued, and that this murderous c*nt is right in the middle of it. Moreover, I'm also glad that the story has served to raise awareness of such things.

As said, hopefully something positive can come from the death of such a beautiful animal.

Wow, "fked in the head", from an evolution perspective, I think the opposite is likely more realistic...

Hunting big game such as lions, elephants, etc. I think is only morally wrong because all too often the wrong animals (the endangered ones) will be dragged into the hunts due to people wanting new experiences. I don't think comparing this instance to fox or pheasant hunting in the UK is appropriate, neither are endangered or likely to be confused with a UK based animal. ie people aren't going to hunt otters off the back of chasing down foxes. Likewise people aren't going to kill ospreys because they've hunted pheasant.

But this sort of thing has been going on forever and probably a few more have been shot today. Why get outraged about it now?

There have been, however, several documented and prosecuted cases of birds of prey being eradicated by gamekeepers keen to protect game birds being reared for shooting.

Anyway, back to our favourite dentist, it seems he's an all round nice guy after all ...

So anglers are "pretty fked in the head." Wow.

Murderous? In what way is this murder, was the lion actually a man in a suit who was murdered?

Don't get me wrong, the guy sounds like he is more than a bit naughty and shouldn't have done what he did, but the mock outrage over this is mind boggling - actual murderers get nothing like the vitriol this guy is receiving - maybe a bit of perspective would be useful.

I realise the thread title is somewhat in jest (I hope), but a question to all of the people calling for this guy to be literally thrown to the lions - do you mean it? Do you actually think a human being should be killed because he shot an animal?

Yes very true and somewhere I believe our laws are very weak. It isn't the punter who kills them, it's the businessman (aka gamekeeper). Unfortunately it's difficult for the punter to know whether their employed gamekeeper is law abiding or not. Personally, I'd rather spend more money to have a hunt hosted knowing that BoP were protected and respected.

I read on the BBC news today he's getting all kinds of st dug up on him now. I can't believe the man didn't know what he was doing was illegal. Therefore, hang him out to dry.
