Morrisons wanted 10p for a bag for life so my load got dumped at the checkout and I went elsewhere.

For the sake of 5p or taking a plastic bag with you when you go shopping there aren't half some right bellends here. If you've seen the damage plastic bags do to the environment and you still bleat about this new law you're either very callous or very thick. Yes the regs need tidying up and clarifying but the basic idea of getting rid of these bags is sensible.

Asked the girl behimd sainsburys till how it had gome down with customers and she said she had loads of people moaning at her about it and one woman even left a basket full of stuff and stormed out.

FIVE fkING PENCE, and it goes to charity, and in return you get a bag which isnt going to split before you get to the car, infact the new sainsburys bags are very strong! What is wrong with people.

Standard response, puff out chest, get upset and shouty, then check what are we complaining about today?

Fair enough, but...1p in VAT goes to the Exchequer, so 5p doesn't go anywhere, and the 4p remains in the hands of the retailer. CMD has 'promised' that what happened elsewhere in the UK, where some retailers kept the 4p, won't happen this time. What's the score on this?

Sainsbury's aren't passing on the full bag price to charity because they're supplying thick er bags, some of the other retailers are.

Telegraph said:
In a statement to The Telegraph, Sainsbury's admitted a portion of each 5p charged goes towards the cost of supplying its new bags, which are more expensive than standard carriers. It is voluntarily giving any remaining profit to charity.

By contrast, Tesco, Waitrose, Morrisons, Asda, Co-op and M&S still offer single-use bags that are less than 0.07mm thick and are allowed to deduct only "reasonable costs" from the 5p fee. These include the cost of "changing till systems" and "training staff", but not the money used to purchase stock.

The official guidelines on the deductions state: "You can’t include existing costs, such as the cost of the bags. You’re likely to see reasonable costs significantly reduce after the first year."

Many firms, including Asda and Morrisons, have waived their right to deduct any costs at all. In effect, they are giving more than 4p in every 5p to charity after tax is deducted. They will save money over time as shoppers start to bring their own bags.

Thanks for the link. As expected, and to be fair with a proviso or two, CMD was promising something he could not deliver.

This is a sale after all not a tax, hence the 20% (1p) VAT payment and the remainder residing with the retailer to perform many, few or no tricks on.

At my Tesco self-checkout you just get the same guaranteed to split bag that you got before the charge.

Wonder if there is anything in the regulations to stop an enterprising type standing outside the stores, and handing out free of charge branded bags advertising their wares? Could be totally unconnected to the supermarket business. Would the supermarkets "move them along"?

It was a no brainer. Stop free bags. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. They did not need to dress it up as some altruistic move. Instead there is a fudged up system in England.

I have not looked at the economics behind it, don't care. I think that in this day and age it is nice to have less rubbish floating around. Not going to impact a lot on the litter front, probably, but its nice to start somewhere and make thinks just a little bit better.

Over here in Welsh Wales it is second nature no to go out with a few bags in the boot of the car. I paid once for them. I will not pay for them again as they will be replaced when the wear out FOC.

There's something not quite right about retailers keeping some of the money to make bags which are thicker and presumably going to take even longer to biodegrade.

Hardly affects me anyway - either I'm just buying a couple of things which doesn't warrant a bag or I get it delivered. The only change I've had is being given a free bag for life as a result of this, i.e. yet more plastic.

Meanwhile everything that's on the shelves is packaged in ridiculous amount of the stuff.

mine introduced a significantly stronger bag a week or two before the charge was implemented. No need to double bag anymore.

Law of unintended consequences. I now throw away a big thick plastic bag rather than a small thin one.

But you have fewer to throw away. Years ago we used to have hundreds of the things now not so many.

Another law of unintended consequences. I now have to buy and throw away bin liner bags, rather than re-use old carrier bags. Net plastic saving = 0

Yep its the usual, fine the end user, instead of dealing with the issue at source.
